hi all my RR feels sluggish when pulling away and takes a while to change gear goes ok till 3rd then a while till it goes in to 4th had new gear box before I got it and it one of the ones with out dipstick so just wondered how I could check it for oil level and how the best way to top it would be if needed
It on a 2000 2.5td
Any help would be much appreciated
 
Just a thought have you got a MAP sensor problem. You should have MAF sensor as well try unplugging it as when faulty can cause hiccups
 
As said above ,The pipe from the manifold to the sensor on the fuel filter can split and sometimes fall off:eek:,.. also theirs a green sensor on the head for,think its ecu engine temperature Anyway they can affect the way the gears change making them slow to change and holding lower gears longer ,worse when cold...:(....RR.

Thanks ive cheaked all of the above mentioned put new line on when done the glow plugs
Was thinking it might be oil bit low in box but with out a dip stick I got no way to check it didnt know if it would have a bit on side of the gear box to undo to check level and top up if necessary
 
There is a level plug on the gearbox. You have to have the box cold, start the car, run through all of the gears and back to park to charge the TC and transmission, remove the plug (with the engine still running) and fill with fluid to the bottom of the hole. If you turn off the engine with the plug out, fluid will go everywhere as the level is much higher when stopped as the TC etc. drains back to the transmission sump.
 
With the engine stopped, undo the filler plug on the gearbox sump enough to allow a little oil out into something that will allow you to see the condition of oil in the box.
Carefully and it'll be a little messy.
Alternately, buy 10ltr of dexron 2 or 3 and a new filter,
Get the gearbox hot after a drive.
Drop the oil from the sump plug.
Let it cool and refill until it drains from the level plug.
Start the engine and slowly go through all the gear positions from Park through reverse and so on and then back to park. With foot on the brake.
Leave the engine running and then refill again until it starts to drip or lightly run from the level plug.
Run it for a week and then repeat again but this time remove the gearbox sump after draining and replace the filter at the same time.
Then you will have diluted a great deal of old oil and should feel a difference if the filter and oil hasn't been done in a while. ;)

Thanks for that I know they normally come with dip stick but this one didn't so wanted to check the levels to see if it was bit low ill give it a look at weekend

Land Rover stopped fitting dip sticks after a certain year. My RR is a2000 and didn't have a dip stick but when I had to have the gearbox changed a dipstick was fitted to make life easier for me.

BIG tip make sure your filler plug undoes okay before draining oil from gear box or you could be in difficulties when trying to refill it

Might have to see about getting one fitted

No we picked up a gearbox from an older RR that had only 60000 and a dip stick .As they are the same gearbox it went straight on. I do believe that a dipstick from an older box can be fitted to the newer RR's with out no problems
