The freelander I bought last month supposedly had a new gearbox fitted in February. the gearbox works but I am really suprised at the revs to speed ratio. in 5th the revs for 70mph are 3500-3750 this seems really high to me for what is essentially a normal cruising speed. As a consquence I am up and down the gearbox like a whores draws and it seems to be drinking diesel (doing some tests now).

There is no evidence of clutch slip and it pulls all the way up teh revs. Could the wrong gearbox be installed or the right one installed incorrectly? or are these revs normal for the XDI?

Any Help much appreaciated.

Same with and without the propshaft. Went out today to do some more quick tests (mondo mode) 1st gear 3000 revs 10mph, 2nd gear 3000 revs 20mph 3rd gear 3000revs 30mph. then there is a bit of a jump to 4th gear 3000revs 50mph 5th gear 3000revs 60mph. Basically the rev to speed to me seems off so on a dual carraigeaway cruising I am well above 3000 revs

Does seem very high, my xdi is about 2900 rpm when at 70 mph. The rover PG1 gearbox fitted to our hippos was also used on a variety of rover and mg's across the years.
I think an unsuitable variant of the gearbox has been fitted, inadvertandly cocking up your gearing.
Have a look for some numbers on the Gbox and whack them into google.
Forums.mg-rover.org can help you out too.

cant see a stamp anywhere from underneath or with air box removed. Its seems there are at least 3 variants 200/400/75 and 600 and assume something different again for the freelander. Bit of a gamble though to get one fitted assuming it is this. but I cant see what else it could possible be but the gearing. a few hundered revs difference maybe, but not over a 1000 difference from others.

yet more info, just found out that the fittings are different for the landy but you could put a petrol 1.8 box on a diesel 2.0L as they are exactly the same just different gearing. this would make perfect sense as the pertol would have a far higher rev range and therefore gearing would be shorter for same shift rate. I going to go with my gut on this one but anyone have anymore info, or does it just sound crazy?

Makes sense mate, sounds like you have the petrol box fitted.
On the plus side track down a second hand doozil box, fit it, then flog your petrol one probably get your dosh back.

Its an easy job to do if your handy with the spanners, I did a clutch change on an L series, on my back, with lunch, in about 4 hours no dramas.
Word of advice, track down the proper gear oil first, MTF-94 from memory i finks or castrol syntrax 2 form halfrauds. pricey fully synthetic stuff.

When you get it sorted, I usually cruise happily about 68mph, 70+ the hippo drinks the juice.

Thanks BDB, I have ordered a secondhand deisel box (double checked it!!) and should be here Tueday for fitting wednesday. Ill let you know the outcome.

Ahh, now really worried, just been doing some real hard searching and found a similar thread elsewhere with some owners of a 98XDi (similar to my 2000 XDI) reporting revs at 3000-3300 and reffering to the earlier IRD ??

really confused and already at teh garage getting a gearbox fitted dam dam and double dam. will report if I have basically swapped out a perfectly good gearbox for another perfectly good gearbox doh!!!!!!!!!!!

can anyone tell me what revs they get at 50 and 70 in 5th in to 2DI

Right, what a waste of money that was. revs are exactly teh same with new gearbox as old. Ebay hear I come. A bit more reaserch tells me that the IRD ratios did change in 2001. coudl this be the mistery reason why some of us get 2700 revs and some get 3500 revs at 70 in 5th gear.

anyone out there get any other ideas why teh revs would be so different?

This is for a 2di not TD4

Hmmm, sounds like you have swapped the petrol box for a ...... petrol box.

I fitted a "diesel box" at the beginning of the year, the dumb assed breakers yard assumed it was a diesel box that is because it was in fact a petrol box. Accelerates really nice but is too low a geared for motorway use.

The only fault with my original box was the final drive carrier hub splines had sheared, and i haven't been arsed to see if they are the same part number in either box yet......

Would normaly agree but the breaker I spoke I explained the problem and he was the one that said to me you had to be careful as they were both similar and assured me that what he was sending was a deisel box. AHHHHHHHHH

calm blue ocean, calm blue ocean. Anyway I will look at the box as soon as I get back and start checking stamps and stuff and let you know what I find.

The problem is they are identical from the outside, and i can't see that the ird would cause this.... my max speed in 5th is 90mph at 4500rpm if this helps. I did post up about this issue some time ago, and there are the mph per rpm values somewhere....

found this for those who are interested

Gearbox identification
This overhaul manual is applicable to PG1
gearboxes having the following Serial No. prefixes:
S4EM - 1.8 petrol engine model
S7EMU - Diesel engine model

apparently the U stands for uprated which is for the shaft being thicker and final drive change for dealing with the torque from the deisel

amnd more

Added some similar info on yer other thread, i just looked at my old box and cannot find any ID marks anywhere, looks like my best bet is to overhaul my old box and remove the chances of another breaker yard monkey sending me another " it'll be alright mate its off a freelander" gearbox..............

Youll have to let me know how you get on as I may have to do the same. Goign to try and get this mess sorted on monday but I need the proper gearbox as I do a lot of motorway driving

Update on my gearbox. Installed new gearbox which I know defintely comes from a diesel.

Needless to say rpm has dropped and now doing around 2700 to 2750 at 70mph rather than the 3500 I was reporting before.

Its not all good news though, on the new one I ahve intermittent HDC egagement in the low gears and I can get it to stay in reverse. All forward gears work fine.

Any ideas anyone ?

my 2000reg XDI is at 3000 revs at 70mph. i allways thought they could do with a 6th gear on them.

but it still happlily cruises at 90mph at around 3500revs.

yours seems quite high, it must be well noisy just on a carriageway let alone on the motorway

As I said mine now is at close to 3000 at 70mph and is a different car to drive now that it has the proper gearbox in it. The only issue now is the fact that bloody reverse dont work, or at least keeps popping out with that awful grinding sound, so can reverse of sorts but not right. I dont think its the linkages as reverse worked fine on the petrol box, so grrrrrrrr.

I am getting another gearbox sent over from the breakers but this will be number bloody three !!

I also noted refernces to the IRD ratios but again I dont think this has anything to do with the gearbox ratios or the RPM at speed.
