Hi all. I have a P38 1996 2.5 d.

All ok until recently where when changing up from first it appears to change back to first, then rev right round to 4000 rpm (speed increases) then finally change up to second.

When i go back down to first gear. ie at traffic lights it repeats the above.

Other gearchanges appear erraric.

Gearbox oil is red and filter also chaned about 3 years ago.

Dose this in cold and when warmed up.

Any idears?

I have heard that the governor valve may need cleaning but cant find anything on where it is, how to get to it or how to clean it !

Time for a oil and filter change.....

While your at it, add a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix as this will help clean the valves, galleries and etc....should help to stop your flaring issue!!

And next time change the oil and filters at 24K miles or 2 year intervals which ever is sooner!

As above, oil and filter change should be every 24K miles. Make sure you use the correct refill procedure.
There is no governor valve on the ZF4HP22 fitted to your car, control is electronic.

Thanks,

To be honest its probably only done 3000 miles but i did not realise the gearbox oil needed changing so often?

Will go to island4x4 and get some parts and a bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix for the weekend.

Thanks again. Top site.

There's another problem that be can causing this.
Try & get the vehicle on some proper diagnostics & check out the engine temperature sensor. If it's stating the temperature is minus 40, then replace this sensor. It costs approx £15 but causes hell with the auto boxes when they fail.

Would that be the ECU temp sensor Rick?

Hi All,

A update.

Thanks for the replies. Have been off the web lately.

Changed the gearbox filter, oil and added the trans fix stuff. No difference in the way it drives.

If the only other item could be the ECU temp sensor I may replace this if its only £15.

What item on 'www.island-4x4.co.uk' is it, as I can't find it on there and they are only up the road from me.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I have changed the gearbox filter, oil and added some Lucas Transmission Fix. No change.

Changed the Engine temperature sensor (green one). Still no change.

Dose anyone know where i can get the ecu read and who wont charge me a fortune? I am near Ashford Kent, but can drive it to someone?

Thanks

Lucas can take up to 1K miles to be effective, did you add enough?
There are unlikely to be any faults logged in the ECU, there were none on mine.
