Hi all,

Posted some time ago about a grating sound I had on overun and apart from eliminating the rear diff from the equation I put it to the bottom of the list as gear changes were spot on anyway. The noise has now got worse and has changed to more of a whirring sound having briefly disappeared before noise changes. As suggested to me about 12 months ago I bought some output bearings and set about starting to fit them today. Firstly though I removed the front prop and went for a drive in diff-lock and the noise was still there. I therefore assumed the front ones were ok ... couldn't feel any movement on the flange either. While driving it though I had removed the centre seat and cover so that I could hear better. The noise sounded like it was coming from the hand brake drum so I thought rear output bearings. Took the drum off and same again, flange solid, no leaks so put it back together. The sound definately sounds like it's that area though. I also drove it with the tranny box in neutral (without moving of course) and went through all gear changes, up and down, and no sound there.

So, any fresh ideas? Had new clutch 12 months ago so nothing in that area.

Thanks all ... still drives perfectly so no panic yet! :scratching_chin:

How about hand brake drum ? have you tried backing the shoes right off as i had a binding prob that only seemed to show up going along

Have taken the drum off due to it seizing following wading so it's all copper greased up inside. Took it off again today to check rear output bearing and all seemed fine with it. Only makes the noise on overun though, it would probably do it all the time I would think if they were binding? Maybe not?

I get a rumble on over run from what i think is the drum only happens when you just come off the gas.
I have a shagged gearbox mount, the one on the tranny box and have ordered a new one, if its not that i think mine is rear diff, but have a spare axle so if it comes to it will change that

one thing worth checking is free play in intermediate gear ,not difficult to remove sump to check

Thanks James, that'll be next weekends job then ... how much free play should there be and how easy is the fix if that seems like the problem?
Would that not have made a noise while I drove it with the tranny in neutral though or would it only show when moving?
Thx :)

I get that rumble too H but it coincided with when I fitted the 2" lift kit. The sound I'm talking about is much higher pitched ... like a dry grating originally but now a whirring sound. Always thought a spring had become detached or a bearing collapsed ... where is the problem. Will check what James has suggested too :)

hehe you tighten nut on rear with 30mm socket a big bar carefully till free play is removed ,careful not to go too far other wise bearings will be tight then restake nut with a chisel
