Started gettin the gear box out my TD5 today to renew clutch. All goin well up until the starter motor. Two bottom bolts, no problem. Top nut thats stuck half way up the devils arsehole:(:mad:. What the feckin hell is that all about. It would appear i need a 16mm shallow socket(bottom bolts are 13mm mind) with an extension bar the exact length of the starter motor to allow a ratchet (not one thats too fat, or it wont go on) to fit into the tiny bloody space left to work with.

If a Land Rover design guru had miraculously appeared up my drive today, he would have had a problem with his feckin nuts as well, cos ma boot would hav been clangin off them ten to the dozen.

Anyway, now thats off ma chest, has anyone been here before and got an easy, or any solution to this, before I have a brain haemorrhage.

From what i gather by reading, not doing yet:) A lot of times the whole assembly was removed as a lump. But then i also read that tippng the assembly down at the back gave just enough clearance for a long extension.

As i said, i'm learning here too but it does look like they were never made to be fixed:mad::mad:

I probably have a clutch coming up soon, not looking forward to that.

its a 15 mm flang nut you need a 3 8th ratchit 4 inc extion bar and a shallow socket but if your doing the cluth check the fly wheel cus they are duel mast if you need any more info just message me in work for landrover

I seem to remember spending a couple of hours on that one, double check that 16mm socket though, I seem to think that mine was 15mm, but memory isn't one of my talents. For what its worth I cut down an old socket to shorten it, welded an M10 bolt about 80mm long into the drive end and then used an ordinary socket on the bolt, the advantage being that the slim shaft of the bolt then bypassed the flange obstruction. Putting it back on with the same 'adaptor' was a breeze,.. good luck with it.

Thanks guys. Every word appreciated. Wasn't 100% on the 16mm, you know what its like when its touchy feely stuff. Goin to have an other rattle at it today. Goin to check fly wheel when i get box off. Fingers crossed its ok. Thanks again.

0k.....got the box out. Top flange nut is 15mm, and quite easy got to with shallow socket and 6" extension bar.

Couple of things i need advice on. How do i know if the flywheel is ok. Also never noticed some wires at the front of bell housing and snapped them when lowering the box. Two going to a sensor that appears to pick up the teeth on the flywheel on the offside of the engine, and one very fine black cable on the near side of the engine. ****ed off, but thats where i am and just going to have to fix it. Can someone tell what these wires are? Especially fine black one as i cant see where it broke out of.

I remember that bolt when I had to change the starter motor - cannot believe they designed it like that:crazy:

It came out with a good selection of extension bars and a slim ratchet

I'm guessing that at least some of the wires you are talking about go to the crank sensor - a TD5 will not run without one.

Other wires may be to the transfer box switch.

Got one sorted, i think. Black cable i mentioned goes to the oil pressure sensor. Had a look at a mates td5 and its to the rear of the turbo and below the manifold. Lucas plug with two cables goin into flexi cable shield, goes up and behind rear of rocker cover and into loom. Black cable doesnt seem to go anywhere tho. Its loose on my mates as well.

Other cables goin to sensor on very front of bell housing above starter motor. Had to have a guess at what one goes where here. One was white with coloured stripe and other was orange. its 50/50 so fingers crossed. Unless anyone can give me a definite on it.
