First clean the spade end to see if it's got any corrosion, se if the car starts, if not then remove the starter motor, change out the contacts and plunger.

not saying I won't need the fix kit but I'll see how it goes next few days 
Well just drove to the shops and when I came out took 2 turns to get going
so might still need it sooner rather than later. I'll see how it goes for next few days.

I'm presuming you just cleaned the spade contact and maybe the earthing point of the starter motor, you have not actually removed the starter and replaced the contacts and plunger.Update: gave the contacts a good clean and seams to be starting on the button again

Any Freelander that has covered 75,000 or more should have the contacts and plunger changed out, it's not an hard job and will last you another 75,000 miles plus
