Guys, the time has come when I need your help. Secretly I was hoping it would never happen.....

My 2002 TD5 (98k miles) has developed a rumbling noise in the gearbox area. The noise is there both when stationary (with the engine running) and when on the move, the only time it goes away is when I depress the clutch.

I've checked the level of the geabox oil - no probs there. I’ve just taken it to a local garage (non LR specialist) where the rather helpful mechanic said – “yeah sounds like it needs an gearbox overhaul…..” Anybody got any other ideas - preferably which are easier and cheaper to fix??

Mark

release bearing - cheap as chips but still needs a gearbox removal to do it - change the whole clutch at the same time.

cheaper option - live with it till you lose the clutch.

Cheers, I like the live with it option - sounds cheep. Any idea how long I will be able to live with it until it falls to bits?? I've probably done about 500miles since I first noticed it i.e. had the radio turned off....

Also by leaving it is it likely to cause damage to anything else and leave me with a bigger bill at the end??

no it shudnt be a bigger bill.
i have had a grumbling clutch release bearing on my nissan fur over 9000 miles - just keep an ear out fur it - and if it starts sounding really nasty then take it to a clutch place - mr clutch or summat.

Just spoke to a local Landrover specialist, they said it could be the release bearing or the floating flywheel and recommended changing both. Is there anyway to tell which part it is that is knackerd??

I meant is there anyway to tell which part it is now before it compleatly gives up.

Like the explanation though at least I will know which it is when it does finally go!!!

i have no idea - but I suspect if its the flywheel, it wouldnt stop if you put your foot on the clutch. trytaking it to a couple of clutch specialists - you know "I got this funny noise wot is it" - or berra still get yo Doris to take it in "wots this funny noise - my husband will kill me if i have broken his car" :D

My release bearing has been 'rumbling' in fact I can feel it through my foot a little bit, and it been doing it getting no better, NO worse for at least the last 20k miles

But I mostly do long M way type trips, so don't use the clutch that much, but make sure I don't rest my foot on the pedal, not even at traffic lights . . . .

Thanks for your help guys. Can I just check weve got this the right way around as my rave cd thinggy seems to contradict (I think). My noise stops when I push the clutch peddle - Rave CD says if its the release bearing you get the when you push the clutch peddle.

Yep, usually 'quiet' except when you press the clutch . . . if, when stationary, at idle, just rest the weight of your foot on the peddle, and take it off again, and you'll more than likely hear (or even feel through thin soled shoes) the bearing noise !!

Im scratching my head now.....

Mine is noisy all the time EXCEPT when I press the clutch

Steve, I think you are saying yours is only noisy when you press the clutch

Seems to be the opposite?? Do people still think is the release bearing or could it be something else like the primary input bearings on the gearbox??

It could be either, or both !!

The release bearing can 'grind' or 'rumble' all the time, only when your foot is off the clutch, or only when your foot is on the pedal, or when the pedal is depressed, or a combination of all . . .

If your is doing it all the time the eng is running, start up and crawl underneath and have a listen, a short (about a foot) of wood, or a biggish screwdriver can act as a stethoscope . . one end on the gearbox, or transfer box, or bell housing, the other end against your ear . . it will amplify the nosie 'inside' rather than you hearing the noise of the engine itself !!!
