Need a little advice should i change a series 2 box crunches a bit from 3rd to 2nd for an overdrive g box from series 3 ? Looked at it looks big job
cheers craig

It is quite a big job as it has to come out of the passengers door!

I changed a series 2a for a series 3 box having been advised they are interchangeable.

NOT quite so straight forward.

Does not physically drop straight in due to position of clutch slave cylinder clashing with cross member.

Aagh.

If I were doing it again I would keep to same series, i already had the replacement box so I persevered.

get the seat box out , floor out, gear tunell out, all the **** out the way till yer can see all the box, lot quicker than strugling with it all

SII third to second will always crunch because theres no syncromesh on second gear ie crash box,,,both of mine did the only way is by double de clutching something very few people know about or are willing to learn to do these days.I taught my son to drive in a sii he had to double de clutch cos the vehicle was undrivable otherwise it takes time to learn do it properly but very satisfiying when you master it...HIS mates all had hot hatches but they were fasinated by the old landy and all coming ti me to teach em how to do it...These days of syncro ,auto boxes,a lot of people have forgotten how to drive properly, nobody knows hand signals any more,ok all cars have indicators ect but in an emergency they dont half come in useful. If your indicators pack in you hand signal you are still covered by law, dont indicate, turn ,have a bump you are breaking the law very old fashioned i know but it makes for a better driver....i also know most of the young, uns will disagree, years ago thats how you where taught to drive at least when i was young!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I made a special tool which allows my gearbox to dangle dead level in all directions, but it can be tipped to match angle of the engine.

Cheers Guys gearbox staying in seems that there's nowt wrong with it. But going to fit Overdrive and free wheel hubs any advice?
The climb is hard but the view is great !!

oh ah, now yer tell us yer dint kno thers no synchro ! haha, keep it in the motor, its ok , honest, jus get used to drivin it, tis fun when yer kno how !

even without sycro you can get a smoothish gear chanfe down just dont rush it let it slip in

just a quick thought, has the gearbox got plenty of oil and that its not 30 years old
just to make sure drain it all out and refill with good ep 80-90
that will help no end

when swapping the overdrive onto your gearbox, DO NOT clean the grease (ASP) off the splines unless you have some ASP to replace it with, it'll look like crappy crud but it's there to protect the splines
