Could be a clutch release bearing yes, this will make a noise when clutch is pressed, not make a noise when clutch is not pressed.
this will happen in any gear or neutral, and when moving or stopped.
good shout on the brake drum tbh, but if it happens when stationary aswell it cant really be that!
clutch release bearing usually makes a noise all the time once it has gone bad, but yours might be half broken! and it could aswell be a dodgy spring on the clutch cover maybe.
good luck testing it out
remember you can put your transfer box in neutral by sleecting halfway in between high and low ratio, and that way your can put your main gearbox into gear and release the clutch, without moving anywhere.
this may help you to find out where the noise is coming from.
cheers.
Thanks for your suggestions, Mr Noisy.
That's exactly what a friend who is working in a Land Rover service unfortunatly far away from me, told me after reading my post at Italian forum and listening to the recording of the noise I did with my pda
Noise recording :
WAV and
MP3
This is translation to English of the tests I did yesterday morning :
1) shift to reverse gear and release clutch slightly sharply so that car starts to move backwards
2) the car moves and the noise is heard
3)
I press the clutch and I keep it pressed , the car stops and the noise is still there
4) shifting to 2nd 3rd 4th 5th gear, the noise is still there (so I think it is not a gearbox reverse/5th gear shaft problem)
5) shifting to N, to L the transfer box, the noise is still there
6) I release the clutch and the noise comes to end.
Just repeating the above sequence, the noise comes again, not all the times.
No noise at all by normal driving in 1st-5th gear.
No noise at all with engine idle, gearbox in neutral and clutch released.
I think that in reverse gear the clutch bearing or, as you said, a spring of the clutch cover is stressed and makes noise.
Do you think should I immediatly proceed to replace the parts ?
Thanks again.
