im new to this my 1986 defender as a 300tdi engine fitted, ive just got it and when ive looked underneath there seams to be a drain plug missing its at the bottom of the gearbox where it connects to the engine,is it a dry clutch or should it be in,any info on these would be very helpfull as i havent got a clue thanks john.

dry clutch hole lets out any oil leaking or water that gets in bell housing isnt water tight seal ,plug just bungs hole while wading remove after as some water will have got in

my clutch also whines and find second gear hard to engage, any ideas, all other gears are perfect and when in second its ok

Presuem you have the answer to the clutch housing hole?

In case not, it's there to let any minor oil leaks out rather than contaminating the clutch plate. If you plan on goign through deep water, you should put a wading plug in it (essentially a threaded sump plug) to stop water getting in.

You'll have a second similar hole further forward at the front of the engine too.

re: gearbox - you really need to pm jamesmartin - he's the man when it comes to gearboxes.

Sam is probably right, but I don't know enough to be sure. Gears have a syncromesh ring which matches the speed the gears are turning to each other to avoid them 'clashing' and to make gear change easy.

If one of these rings is failing, could explain your problem.

Might be worth changing the gearbox fluid (MTF 94 or Automatic Transmission Fluid Dex II or III - don't even think of putting EP90 in it!!!) to see if that improves.

Also see whether double declutching when changing into 2nd helps - if it does, would support it being the syncromesh. Google search on how to double declutch if new to you, but in short this means declutching, shifting into neutral, re-engaging the clutch, maybe rev-up the engine by dabbing the accelerator in between ("midway throttle"), and than de-clutch again and shift into the appropriate gear.

Hi, if your synchro was going on 2nd gear it may be hard to select gear (stiff) or if the synchro is very worn it will crunch selecting gear ? if it isnt crunching and just stiff to select gear it may be poorly adjusted bias springs on the selector housing or may be a broken spring on selector pin ? all so could be a missing dowel between transfer box and main gear box if some one has had it seperated.

i think the gearbox as had it also the front prop shaft when the vehicle is stood moves from side to side, its going to be costly,i think to get it right.cheers john.
