Hi guys, serial no 36116606D. I have just been given it but no history or knowledge of what it is or what it came out of originally so any info you can give as to AGE, Synchro will it be just 3n4, or all synchro before i open it up

I have a late series 3 suffix D gearbox with synchros on all gears
I read each series gearboxes 2, 3 etc had its own letters
Post a few pics up showing the stamped number and also as the clutch slave housing differ on late and early boxes so that will help

2/2A box you find the serial on the gearbox its self. Series 3 its on the front edge of transfer box but as @Steve above says clutch slave position is different.

Hello Steve. This is from my 1974 series 3 which was ex - British army then ex - Kenya army. I have good reason to believe so but it could just be ex - Kenya army from new. Anyway, I took apart the gear box because all gears were jamming in place in particular second and third. I need help with identification so that I can buy the correct parts for the rebuild. I'm based in Kenya so it's important I get things right because once I receive the parts I have little options in sending them back to the UK for exchange etc. Hope you can help.

I wonder if the original number ground off and a military number been stamped on
I would read the s3 manual as above and see what changes were implemented and described

And also see the parts book in the same link

Anything is possible especially in Africa. There seems to be a need to always go for the shortest, quickest, easiest method of fixing things rather than doing it properly. There is no excuse because parts are available and if not immediately then in a few weeks.

If I could get another box with it's original parts in it that would be the way to go. That isn't possible. The reason I included the photo with the shaft with bearings is because I took a count of each part hence I was told it would be the best way of knowing what you have rather than going with 'Suffix' identification. It's my best bet for now.

Pic of the reverse gear can help with box identification.
Your clutch arm has had rod wired in, not unusual saves messing to put it in place after fitting box.
That bolt holding stick from turning not standard but guess does the job.

Whoever put that bolt in did so because the threads on the housing were stripped. I checked and it was immediately obvious a large diameter screw/bolt was needed. If things are looked after they will serve the purpose and work well.

That is the reverse gear and needs replacing.

So busy looking at parts book where the gearbox parts have different part numbers for different suffixes by studying the supplier pics and comparing with your gb should be able to pin down which suffix you go have

If that idler is type with a cage roller bearing not a bush that points to it being a D suffix box as on casing.
Hmm...1974 series III with a late 2A box! I also recon the same. My 2A's box is also apart (I found it dismantled) so will check on any subtle differences. I know the 2A was purchased brand new by dad so it's pretty much as was factory. Is it possible to make 1/2 gears to synch as is with 3rd/4th? Talking to a local mechanic and it seems a lot of series 2A/3 that are knocking around as recovery tow trucks have been modified with 5 speed boxes from 2.5 Defenders for reliability and parts availability. I prefer the series box, however, getting quality parts in the future maybe a problem. I also have reason to believe the reason my box developed problems was because of bad shifting techniques by different drivers in the past. I did drive it daily before the problems occurred and because the terrain here varies a lot 2nd and 3rd gear come into constant use.

My gut feeling is I need to repair the box properly. Fit roamer dipsticks to ensure ease of checking the oil levels and also perhaps the vented casing for better cooling.

I can't wait to get it working again. Most parts I need are available from Syncro gearboxes.

Thanks everyone.

Just to be clear with the introduction of production all syncro box's [early 70's] Land rover went back to letter A for the suffix [ why who knows?] Difference being they put the numbers and suffix letter on the front edge of the transfer box instead of on the gearbox case as before. So a D suffix numbers/letters on transfer box is from late series 3.
