OK, firstly:
yes the gearbox (squared above) will come out independently of the engine, IRD has to come off first.

Are you sure its the gearbox and not the IRD cogs, they will clonk and jolt when you boost the power at low speeds

Removing the IRD is a MAMMOTH TASK, give yourself 4-5 hours to remove it, refit it.

There are many awkward parts, such as the coolant hoses going into the IRD. They need to be clamped before dis-connecting, otherwise coolant will go everywhere. This will save you draining the whole system.

IRD/Gearbox will need drained, both driveshafts removed, Prop disconnected, exhaust downpipe removed..............the list goes on.

Some pics of the IRD/gearbox without the 1.8:

Yep, Also, before you try to pull out the IRD, you will need to get a hammer and a chisel, and take off the drivers side CV housing. This makes it a thousand times easier to take out the IRD. Also, make sure you do this before you undo the engine mounts : otherwise the CV joint will rest on something annoying.

I posted a diagram earlier about the best way to jack the engine up for refitting. Do a search for that : It will also make replacing the IRD a thousand times quicker.

There is absolutely NO need to remove staking nuts or Driveshaft nuts as according to Haynes for any part of the proceedure: Haynes is a bit bollocks from time to time. When you pull out the driveshaft from the CV housing, (removing the rubber booty) you will see three bearings. Tie the shaft with a bit of rope up to the suspension column. Don't let it dangle around.

What you could also do, remove the prop shaft first : If that noise stops . .then you more likely got a duff IRD rather than a Boong gearbox.

Actually. . .Having done the IRD once. I think I could take it out, and replace it within the hour.

However : with a big capital H. If you have problems releasing the nuts of the exhaust manifold use a blow torch first and while hot get to work on em quick. Taking those off for the first time in 10 years is a shmunt.

Another tip : When releasing the top bolts of the IRD to the gear box for the first time in a decade, use your wrench with a pipe at the lever end for more leverage. I did this from over the bonnet : using a stool to get in there.

Get them pics up Yanick.

If you remove the CV and driveshaft complete, this makes life easier, only IIRC you didnt have a torque wrench for the driveshaft nut 22mm

Expensive though, , , oils etc : I mean, only landrover sell the gearbox oil. You can't even buy the correct oil from another brand. If your gearbox oil is good. . .try getting ready to save it when you pull out the IRD. Thats where it will come out first. Better yet. . .Drive the car around for a bit, and dump the gear box oil before you remove the IRD :)

yeh why is it so hard to find stuff on this forum ? sometimes I get a reply. . .yeah this has been covered a gazzilion times. . and yet, its almost impossible to do an accurate search.

I think you could pull out the shaft with a hammer and chisel first without removing the rubber booty. Just like NI is saying. Just have it tied up first.

first pic is the jacking method. 1. under the sump, 2. use the standard scissor type LR cap to push the engine away from the cross bar: the engine tray mount is convenient here for jacking the engine away, clear of where the IRD will come from.

It's down to picking the right keywords to search for & then you do have to do a fair bit of scanning through threads to find exactly the relevant thing you are looking for.

It gets easier the more you do it. I very rarely ask questions on here (which frees up so much more time to post total bollox) because I almost always find what I'm looking for.

The truth is out there. ;)

you mean 'out there' like hard to believe ? Wow man, ,that is out there. . are you messin with me ?

I did a search for "broken IRD" got 500 something threads.

I did a search for "how to fix IRD" got the same 500 threads.

The truth is out there, but it surley is saturated with juicy wet words. Even then, the fixes lack practical detail.

That's coz you used the words 'Broken' and 'How to fix' as keywords. You'll get any thread that contains the words 'broken', 'how', 'to' and 'fix'. if you just search IRD you only get 53 threads. I don't know how useful any of them are onnacun't of I have no interest in reading them...............but you might. ;)

Even then, the fixes lack practical detail.

Be fair - A) it is just a forum not a Rave download & B) It is in the Gaylander bit & to be honest a lot of them go to garages rather than get fixed at home so there's probably less practical stuff posted and a lot more along the lines of 'mine did that too, it cost £XXX to fix'!
