One for the technical gurus on here.

The R380 gearbox in my '94 300tdi 90 is getting a bit tired, specifically it crunches on the first to second change unless I'm careful.

As i see it there a a few options:-
1) Take the box out and have it reconned.
2) Take the box out and have a go at reconning it myself (I have done a couple of series boxes and one or two other cars but I'm not sure how much specialist equipment is required)
3) Buy an exchange box.
4) Buy a second hand defender box.
5) Buy a second hand disco box (much cheaper than a defender box and it would come with the higher ratio transfer box which would suit my use better than the standard defender unit)

I have plenty of time to make up my mind and source the parts, my existing box is no worse than many I suspect and it really isn't a big deal (yet) But I want "right" I'm just like that.

So what do you think is my best option?

If I go for option 5 how complex is it to swap the linkages etc over from my existing box to a disco one to retain the correct gearstick/transfer box stick arrangement.

Any body got a good R380 kicking about for sale at the right money?

Sits back and awaits the flood of valuable information, offers of free gearboxes and a gang of expert mechanics who like bacon sandwiches, tea and beer :)

unless you know different most 2nd hand boxes have as worn baulk rings as you already have, you need to swap internal selector shaft as well as top to convert from disco to def spec, removing seal collar is one of the hardest things as well as removing refitting bearing behind 1st gear i use a press ,you would get all the bits you need to recon it (new bearings and baulk rings etc)for £200

There is a 6th option, just put up with it. Its not doing any harm so save some money and time. But if you do want to change it. Get a second hand defender box, recon it yourself then change yours for the recon one. You can then sell your old box. I might be interested if you get rid of your old box!! Cheers.
