Hi
I have bought an early td5 which has a noise when selecting 2nd and 4th gear. The noise is as though the gear didn't quite engage correctly (as if the clutch wasn't fully depressed), more of a 'nick' or a very minor 'crunch'. The car does go into all gears and doesn't have any noise in the other gears. Any help appreciated. Many thanks

Hi
So it's likely to be the gearbox and not clutch or clutch hydrolics?
How big/ expensive a job is changing the baulk rings?

if it was clutch or hydraulic operating system it would be in all gears ,easy job if youve done them ,but probably £300 for removal £400 for box with new bearings as well ,unless you can find someone that fixes them

Hi
So if I removed the box, is the ring replacement diy'able or are special tools required?
Thanks again

You could try checking the gearbox oil is OK and not contaminated or incorrect. I've seen a few do this sort of thing with either water contamination or incorrect oil, so as this is a recent purchase which you've probably no history on, may be worth a check first?

i can carry out a repair on the gear box for you if you need to, i would agree with james martin, synchro rings warn cause this problem so a strip down, clean out, new set of bearings and synchro cones and re assemble is probably £350 + vat, remove and re fit would be £200 + vat. and a 12 month warranty included.
