Hiya, im gonna be changing my oil on my IRD and gear box tomoz and i just want to check the oil iv got is ok for the job. I could not source the texaco mtf 94 or the texaco s5 75w/90 as is says in the haynes manual. So i called my local car spares and this is what they recomended of the reg.

Comma gear oil SC75W/90GL-5 semi synthetic IRD oil i think ?
Pro+power gold EP 75W/80 GL4 mineral based gear oil.

Is the minereal based gear oil ok for the gear box cous im sure i read that it should be fully synthetic

Chris

I use the comma oil as above in my ird. Just make sure yer undo the filler plug BEFORE the drain plug as it can be a sod to get undone. They round oft easily.

and use a flat sided socket NOT the multi sided socket as they tend to round the nut off if they slip I had one once did that and had to weld a socket onto it. you have been w
arned.

Thanks guys. I managed to do the IRD oil today i didnt want to do the gear oil cous im not sure that pro +power gold 75w/80 GL4 mineral oil is the right one and i didnt wanna bugger the gear box up . However the IRD oil change was very easy, i just followed the haynes instructions, the fill plug was quite easy to get undone to my supprise. I took the drain plug out and there was some swarthy looking stuff on the magnet and one little shard about a cm long. The oil was filthy tho and stunk quite bad. Note to self ' wear gloves next time lol'. The drain plug for the gear box has a square hole in it and i dont have one of those in my socket set so ill have to get one of those.

I'm assuming you have a PG1 Gearbox. It should be MTF94 as it contains special additives to protect the bearings. 10w40 engine oil can be used for topping up or as an emergency measure as a temporary replacement. The best thing is to get the correct MTF94 oil even if you have to wait to change it. In the Freelander, MTF94 should last year's without issue.

I know yeh, i looked everywere for this oil on the net and the only one i can find is in a 5 gallon drum at £106. I think ill ring my local lan rover tomoz see if they can get hold of some for me.

Thanks guys, i called my local land rover today and they have it in stock £9 a litre so thats sorted now thank god :D.

I now have a coolent leak somewere there was a puddle of it on my drive this morning but i cant see any leaks from the hoses. Back to head scratching mode lol
