gear engagement

hi my 4.6 petrol auto has a problem when i put it into reverse. it gives a winding noise before engaging and then jumps into gear. when i put it into drive it also jumps into gear. when driving it has like a winding / grinding noise when accelerating but noise stops when i lift of the accelerator.

any idea what it might be please.

Checked you transmision fluid level?

Exactly what I was going to say. Remember and check it when the engine is running and been from P to 1 and back again slowly so it actually goes into gear. Run it through the gears twice before pulling the dipstick, wipe, re-fit and check. Sounds a strange method but its the running level you need rather than the static level like on the engine.

No dipstick on the newer ones. just fill to the point where it runs out of the filler hole.

where is the fill point one newer ones ???????
