Hi everyone,

i have recently purchased a 2003 TD5 with low mileage (42k) had a few problems with the auto transmission, but seems to have been sorted by the garage under warranty. (new gearbox oil and filter) this solved the delayed gear engagement. but now it has developed a clonk, when it changes down gears at junctions or just slowing down in traffic, also gear change is not smooth when changing up.... weird all worked fine when first bought it - in may 2010.

any ideas ???? has anyone else had this problem.

(sun roof leaks as normal - will get around to taking out headling and sorting)

I would be questioning the 42k mileage with the seller. I would'nt have thought you should be having these sort of problems at 42k.

I have all the service records to confirm the mileage,

have also questioned the expertise of the garage that performed the oil change, with friends who know of them and they seem a fairly reputable company

i bought the vehicle from a dealer, with a six month warranty (as usual limited)
he seems to be getting a little elusive !!!!

But does your "fairly reputable company" know about Landrovers and in particular how to check the fluid level in an auto box, ie, with the engine running ?
 
There is also a huge debate on weather auto boxes need there oil changing at all on here somewhere, I have done mine but was advised (again on here) that once you do this and run it for a few 100 miles to do it again as changing the inner filter (metal plate thingy) can stir up all the crap so to run it and change again gets shot of all the ****e.

Im sure it was Urban Panzer (discovery2.co.uk) that advised me.

The company, specialises in land rover,

Apparently the recommended oil change is approx 20k, and not done anymore, i presume the initial change gets rid of all the new crap that has built up.

I have done about 120 miles since the oil was changed, maybe i should get underneath and check it myself, although its not as easy as my 110 V8.

I did take it to gumtree, and they said it was gearbox fault, but without further investigation could not say what it could be
 
Some folks do say never change the auto oil as it can stir up a bag of ****
i did mine and ran it up then changed it again straight away including the filter. That was 30,000 miles ago and all ok.
I have 140,000 miles on my td5 and its as smooth as you like. Have you checked the level as they take a lot of oil and need draining and filling by someone who knows what they are doing

I had with my manual........after i realised that i used it a lot without oil in the front axle:doh::frusty:.......replaced the diff and CV joints with new and the clonk dissapeard........I think though it was caused by the threaded diff.
 
Thanks everyone for putting notes up for me,

I have spoken around to various people, and after a look at URBAN PANZER www.discovery2.co.uk It seems that changing oil and filter is quite involved, and maybe the garage changed it correctly (the new oil has shaken up the crud) or incorrectly (insufficient oil). I think that i will have to attempt doing the oil change again myself, and see what i find....

is there any way of cleaning out the system to get rid of the crud, or is it just a case of changing the oil again (so that would be twice) ??
