hi all
Ive had my disco a week now and i think i may have to take it back.
What happens is when changing gear from 3rd to 4th i dont always get 4th and have to look for it,but the worst bit is changing from 5th to 4th it tries to go into reverse which is not good then have to find 4th but get 2nd then try agian and get reverse agian then get 4th.
If you understand that could anyone tell me whats wrong with it so i can go to the garage and not get fobbed off.

thanks
mark

Think I have the same problem, the bias plate needs changing, it's only a couple of quid...

If in neutral and you push lever forward-backwards do you get 1-2 or 3-4

Good luck

it is probably the bias plate ive just done mine its a bit fiddly to get to but an easy job if your a bit handy, where are you located ?

I hate bias plates. I started on cars which did not have them, and also a lovely gear change (Rootes), then drove work cars with strong ones coupled to wrong wheel drive, and yes they used to go 1-4 rather than 1-2.

I managed to get rid of one by blowing the gearbox (crappy Ford).

Poor layout and strong bias made gear changing painfull, if my mid late 70s hot hatch could have a perfect gear change (1975 box I think 1978 car), why not a late 80s car?

? what

Sounds like bias plate for sure - easy job and a £5 from LR.

When you fit the new one, leave the retaining bolts slightly loose so the plate can move slightly from side to side; find the optimum position for 3rd gear and all the rest will be in line, then tighten up bolts.

Yes I have driven cars with such strong bias changing from 1 to 2 was quite difficult as it pushed the lever to 4.

My own car at the time changed perfectly and you could feel every gear exactly what is was doing and there was no springing at all.

The 4 wheels and a board box was like stirring marbles with a stick on a strong spring.

I drive autos these days, slightly dodgy leg

for the price of them IMO you better replace the springs(nr 8, 9) and plastic bush(nr 4) too if you are already there cos they wear out in time: Allbrit.de - Ersatzteile für LAND ROVER & MG ROVER , also you might see the "channels" made by the springs on the lever, when mine was out i refilled with welder and polished back to normal then it was like new

..and as a matter of fact to adjust it properly you must select 4'th and keep the lever fully to the right while you tighten the plate by 25Nm
