I am doing a full oil change on my defender 90 2.5tdi an was wondering what are the best oils to put in my gearbox, transferbox, engine and diffs.

Also does a 24 spline and 12 spline diff require diffrent oils???

What quantity an brand of oil do you reccomend????

thanks for the time.

Do a search on here there is plenty to read about it. ep90 in the diffs and transfer box and MTF in the gearbox and dont mix them up

DONT use an oil flush on the engine - if you do itll smoke like a train.

And go for cheap halfords own oil, and change it often. Dnt bother with the fancy stuff, these engines dnt like it.

The carbon deposits that build up inside the engine help it to seal nicely. The oil flush and detergents in fancy oils remove them, so it dnt seal as well any more.

Ive seen the results of this, and years ago, my dad was working on a farm, when the castrol man came round to sell them some oil. He asked him what do you recommend for my landy? And the castrol man himself said what i jus told u!

I've always been told to put ATF in my gearbox, not that I've done an oil change in that in particular yet. Reason given was that the landy gearbox takes a lot more punishment than a normal manual gearbox.

I'm going to look in to that properly now though

what halfords oil should i go for???

10w40 semi/part synthetic

LT77 takes old type ATF (ref comma AQF)

R380 gear box takes ATF DII (comma AQM) if built between 94-98, 98 on takes MTF

EP80w-90 in the diffs and transfer box

i use comma oil, use ep90 in the diffs and transfer box, if you have an LT77 use MTF/AQM in it, if you have an R380 you should use 80w/90 gl5 i believe

LT77 takes Comma AQF oil

R380 (1994 - 1998) takes Comma AQM oil
