Fuel pump died....

Hi all,

Just a quick story for you.

GF's 2002 freelander went to work in Lincoln [from London] and gave up the next day on a short trip. Green flag man said fuel pump dead and recovered it.

I then spent hours looking at forums and got confused as to where the fuel pump is and whether there are two or not as it is on a changeover year.

It is late 2002 so the lift pump is in the wheel arch rather than under the bonnet. That had failed as my local Rangerover dealership had suggested was a common fault. I read somewhere that the pumps last about 60k...car has done 60078!

I also changed the fuel filter and emptied the separator.

The 'in tank' fuel pump I bought had four pins so I'm presuming tank pump is there too.

The job was pretty straightforward. The only problem was getting the old fuel filter out and the new one in....very tight. Also watch for the earth spade terminal and the wire [like a bent paper clip] that connects the fuel pump to the filter..earthing purposes I suppose. Two hours including test drive.

Kudos to eurocarparts who took one pump and two filters back with no surcharge!

Glad you got it sorted. I'm down to an hour from changing out of suit to putting it back on, but I have just bought some ratchet ring spammers which should speed things up.

My fuel pump was dying from 113,000 miles when I bought it but gave up at 120,000 miles.
