Fuel pump dead...air leak?

Hi Folks.

I noticed the pump was noisy Weds night when I put the truck away & then noticed a diesel smell,a quick check showed fuel coming from above the fuel tank.
It started OK & got me to work, the plan was to get it home tonight & find the culprit pipe.
It took a hell of a lot of starting but eventually caught & got me home but drove rough so assumed it's dragging air & hence the noisy pump.
After dropping the tank far enough to get at the pipes I tried to pressurise the system by turning the ignition & nadda,nowt,zip.
No sound from the pump & no leak so question is does running it with air in the system goose pumps this quickly?
If it's got a shedload of air in it will this stop it running the pump?

It's gone to a mates now for him to investigate (towed) but want to know if I'm missing summat.

I'd have put a multimeter on the pump feed and see if it was getting power.

If power, then it's dead, no power and yer fault lies elsewhere!

Get the leccy side sorted, fix the air leak

My question really is "does running with an air leak goose pumps?"

why not lift carpet in boot to get to pump ,running air wont do any pump,but pumps any good but pump sits in tank and are prone for failure anyhow ,

One of the problems with in-tank pumps and these TD5 engines is that the leak-back circuit takes combustion muck back to the tank.

This builds over over time and helps to clog the pump internal filter, making the pump work harder.

Cleaning this filter has rejuvenated many a Disco TD5 pump and makes it run much quieter.

Bingo.

My mate has just called & the pump is absolutely full of crap, also deader than disco (geddit..)
He also thinks I haven't got a leak but it's being chucked out because of the filters being chocker, sound feasible?

No it doesn't. If you've got loose fuel you've got a leak. Check for chafing along the fuel pipes as they go over the chassis - major recall to have this fixed a few years ago.

I had to change one of the over tank pipes last year & still have the others that I didn't use, he's going to put them on anyway.
Is this an inherent issue with TD5s or is mine just unlucky?
Would it be prudent to lift the pump every yr & clean the filter on the pump?
How many filters are on the pump? (I haven't seen it yet)

Hi Keith,

1. As I said before, LR did a major recall to rectify the chafing pipes issue, so no, yours is not at all unusual - it would be wise to add some further protection to the pipes in the form of that black plastic corrugated conduit;

2. Yes it would, for two reasons: 1. it'll keep the pump in optimum condition and 2. it's an early warning indicator of leaking injector seals.
Preventative maintenance avoids trouble, break-downs and unnecessary expenditure.

3. One white plastic gauze filter in the pump.
