Hi Guys,

Getting to the bottom of most of the Rangies problems just one left.

I have a petrol smell at the rear, i want to replace the pipes from the tank to the filter. When i took the cover of the boot floor i noticed that all the pipe connectors were corroded and the same at the filter. I think that if i was to try and remove these they will end up stuffed. I have searched around and can not find much online. It seems they have nuts on them so i presume i will need to buy proper ones. Where can i get them? Or can i do something else?.

I am not sure if this is the problem but i want to change the filter anyway so will have to do it.

I also noticed whilst i had my head under there tonight that the metal strap that goes over the tank and bolts to the chassis is no longer attached as the mount has broken on the chassis. I can weld this up if i remove the tank but will need to disconnect the pipes to do that. I am wondering too if the tank may be cracked on top as the smell is stronger when there is more fuel in it. The strap has obviously been broken for a while so i am thinking it might have damaged the tank bouncing around.

So if i want to buy a new tank where is the best place to go and are they easy to change?.

Cheers

Dean

Take it you have a Classic? An possibly an early one with a steel fuel tank?

Depending on how much you want to spend on it, but sounds like a new tank and the associated pipes need replacing. The pipes are connected to the fuel pump outlet with a compression fitting (don't know for sure on earlier models), so if you can get it undone, and new olive may seal a leak. Also check the seal between tank and pump.

Straps for the tank may be in short supply now.

Thanks for that.

It is a 93 classic and i think it has a plastic tank.

Any ideas where to get the parts?.

All the usual suspects - MM 4x4, Paddocks, Rimmer Bros etc. You will need to know what tank you need though. I would think it is a plastic tank on yours, mine is a '91 and that is a plastic tank.

As for the pipes, the chances are they have corroded through on top of the chassis just behind the rear wheel. Cut out the rotten sections and replace with rubber fuel hose secured with stainless jubilee clips. You may have a bit of a fight replacing the fuel filter if it's all corroded under there, I know I did.

Hope that helps you.

Look for a Company that supplies pnematic equipment and get copper tube (they do metric and imperial) and compression fittings with spare olives for the filter fittings. If copper is good enough for compressed air, gas, hydraulics and brake lines, then petrol is no problem....and it won't corrode!
