fuel gauge stopped working , so put the green and black wire on sender to earth to check wiring and guage , the guage went up to half way so guess the gauge and wiring are ok that correct ?
I then took the sender out and moved it by hand while it's still connected , guage moved up with sender until about quarter of a tank then the needle just drops to empty , same thing happens every time slowly raising sender the needles on guage moves correctly then just over quarter needle just drops ?????

Is the sender still making contact when it gets to a 1/4 of the way up it's scale? Mine was very worn so I just replaced it with a new one..

If you put the Green/Black to earth you sould have a full swing to 'full' on your gauge.
If it's only going half way check it again at the gauge, then meter the cable for continuity.

My fuel gauge was sticking at just below half - wouldn't go any lower. With the sender out of the tank, I could move it from empty to full and the gauge showed the full range too. Both apparently working correctly, but with the sender back in the tank it was sticking again. New sender cured it.
