Disco 2 Fuel filler door

Is there a particular knack of opening & closing fuel filler door ?
I have found the flap release just fine, but when trying to close after fill up, (no expense spared) the flap has to be carefully manipulated to align the door fastener with the inner clip/spigot to get it secured, or it just flaps in the breeze.
Seems a flimsy piece of kit anyway, and would like to get it to be more positive without buying padlock and hasp and staple.
Any known improved methods ?

The only time I ever have trouble closing the filler flap on mine is when I've got the filler cap screwed into the wrong position. Get that right and it closes every time.

Mine sometimes refuses to close, no rhyme or reason to it. Have changed the plastic clip to no avail. If it plays up I have to poke a very slim twig through the gap round the flap to push and hold the clip down and closing the flap.

I superglued my plastic clip in the right place so it didn't keep missing the pin and it's been fine ever since.

New clip fix mine...after the old one flew off one day on a forecourt!

I thought I had an intermittent problem with the catch on mine and ordered a new one. Before I got round to fitting it I discovered, like brian47, that an extra click or two when screwing the filler cap back on solved it.
So I have a spare catch here if you need one...

My cap needs to have the "handle" horizontal too.

Mine sometimes springs open when the nearest door is slammed! Was thinking perhaps need to replace the little plastic catch?

I've also noticed that I can easily open the filler cap without using the dashboard button - it always sticks out a little bit and you can get a finger behind it and pop it open. Obviously not the most secure filler cap fitting in the world! Think i might have to buy a lockable fuel cap

I "fixed" mine by packing the plastic catch out a bit as it wasn't always retaining the flap. Been OK for about 3 years now......

Mine suddenly failed to shut after a fill-up and after some faffing about I 're-aligned' the plate with the pin the catch connects to and it has been fine since. I do agree though that this is not the most robust latch system I have ever seen
