whilst driving along ,slowed for a roundabout, the p38 diesel cut out ,
fuel guage showing just above quarter, then remembered being told from previous owner ,beware of letting it go below this.
Anyway opening cap to put a gallon in there was quite a pressure release when i did open the cap, could this be the problem, blocked breather perhaps, started ok after.

Was it a pressure release or a sucking in of air. It is likely the later and you are getting a vacuum in the tank causing fuel starvation. Breather will be blocked.

to be honest not sure if was in or out ,breather has to be the first port of call 1st ,
I assume this will solve the cutting out issue when getting low on fuel .

Only fill mine when the light comes on and mine sucks air aswell when the caps opened. Think your problem lie's elsewhere.

I can't say that I've ever noticed any pressure changes when I open the fuel cap but . .

I've got a 2.5 auto and now and then, when I'm going downhill and take my foot off, my engine cuts out. It's nothing to do with fuel level and I've fitted a new in-tank pump.

I'm suspecting an engine sensor but as it only happens very rarely and I've now got the hang of re-starting it and it's still a bit chilly out there I haven't investigated further.

Me too : if you find out what it is let us all know.
