OK so plenty of discussion on here about recovery points for offroad fun and games but I'm just wandering what happened to my original front tow eye?

I'm in an R (97) reg 300TDi Disco1 and it is prety much factory spec with no off road mods. I take it off the road fairly regular but i'ts fields and the odd green lane for work purposes rather than serious stuff.

We've not had it long (couple of months) and we have so far (touch wood) only got leaks, rust and a string of punctures with nothing mechanical but when it does it would be good to know that my mate can give me a tow down the local garage when I've finished scratching my head under the bonnet.

My problem is that the front factory fit tow eye is not there and there is no sign of any damage or cutting where it should be. I've got the 2 lashing points a bit further under but no eye sticking out through the gap in the plastic moulding around the number plate. Knowing the location mostly from Disco2's I've checked the Handbook and it says it should be there so it seems to have just vaporised.

Can I just get my pet welder to weld a bit of bent steel bar onto the box section steel (part of the chassie but still learning my way around) that finishes where the eye should be so it sticks out as the factory one would have been?

I would fit a steering guard that includes towing eyes, kills to birds with one stone by protecting the vunerable steering on the disco.

I know plus the p&p but it is black and shinny :D

I must admit, for the sake of truth, honesty and the integrity of the forum, that the one I have in my box is (now) neither black, nor is it shiny.

It may have been, once.

;)

Would that be a nice shade of oxide red, same as the one in my shed and every other one i've seen then???

I wouldn't call it 'nice' ... mottled would be nearer the reality . ;)

Thanks, do I gather from this that while unpleasantly expensive compared to a welded option most people suggest buying a proper bolt on eye? Is this what would have been fitted originally or is it just concern about if the weld is not good it may go when snatched? -EDIT- Though looking back at the image earlier, the bolt on eye is only a loop welded to a couple of mounting brackets anyway so why not take the bolts out of the equation and weld it straight to the chassie? -EDIT- -EDIT- and for reference it is a TDi so give over. -EDIT-

the piece you are looking at is a tie down point to tie your motor to a transporter , DO NOT attempt snatch recovery with that piece of metal or you will be sorry , if you think you need snatch recovery fit jate rings or a steering guard with recovery eyes such as the guardian one as one example of many that are out there ,.
Have seen too many numpties come off worse when using tie down rings and tow balls as recovery points , they are not made for it , it is fooking dangerous !

Rant over , play safely !

No, I mean the factory fitted tow eye that sticks out through the bumper (only on one side) not the 2 vertical U's further back as I said in my OP. I'm not looking for true snatch recovery or a steering guard as it doesn't get onto anything rough enough to realy warrent it, I was only meaning the snatch as the rope picks up if the towing vehicle pulls away a little too sharply!

There's Snatch and there's Snatch... Snatch recovery is done on purpose using a Kinetic Tow Rope then you would for safety require Jate Rings. But a Snatch because "the towing vehicle pulls away a little too sharply" then Land Rovers standard towing eye will do, the rope may or even could break before the eye does.

Hook-front sub frame towing ANR3255 in Land Rover speak, plus the two nuts & bolts.

So looking at the image on the above link and on the underside of the disco, does the eye bolt on with the same bolts the bumper assembly is aparently fixed to? I've got the ~4inch square chassie coming towards the front and what looks loke the bumper mounted at the end with 2 bolts going throught the chassie layed out the same as the holes in the picture of the eye.
