front n/s knocking ...

Bought a 52 plate freelander TD4 manual on Sarturday all good so far......
drove the car 150miles mostly motorway fast A roads all good.....
next morning got up and drove about 5 miles went a knocking started coming from the front n/s wheel.......not good
The knocking got more frequent with the road speed rather than the engine speed.
upon limping home jacked up left hand side and rotated front n/s wheel it had approx 1 - 1.5 inches of freeplay before the drive shalf and rear wheel turned. The noise seemed to come from the end of the driveshalf that goes into the gearbox .
Can anybody offer any suggestions .....

thats the bit i dont understand.
theres lots of links on how to check your drive shats.use the search button on the main freelander page.
you might want to check the wishbone bushes and ball joint.
