Front Driving Lights

hi everyone,
I want to fit the two genuine LR spotlights/driving (Safari 5000s) lights that go in front of the grill on the nudge bar.

Luckily I have managed to get hold of a pair along with the official mounting bracket so I'm happy. Well, Im almost happy, I had assumed that what I would do is mount them and plug them into the fog light connectors behind the bumper, stick the switch in inside and activate the lights with my faultmate system.

However, upon searching the forums it doesn't seem like thats how its meant to work. Ive seen that people have them activated via a relay when they use their high beams.

Will connecting them to the fog light loom not work?? I thought this was the official way they would of been connected, even more so as I have the diesel and I'm not able to have the genuine for lights because of my auto gearbox cooler.

I dont know, I think I would prefer them to be activated by the fog light switch. For those of you that have them, how do you have them wired up AND does anyone know the OFFICAL LR way of wiring them as they would of left the factory??

Surely if you connect them to the fog light loom then they won't work on high beam, only on the fog light switch ?
Can't see any reason why you can't use the high beam as a trigger for a relay

Buy the proper wiring kit from Land Rover, it's about £30 pounds. It plugs into the back of the headlamp piggyback style, and has the relay allready fitted in the wiring.

I just ripped that loom out of my Rangie last night, as it had the spot lights on when I got it. It's a nasty bit of wiring - a shoddily crimped pre-insulated connector fed from the battery and crappy blue relay fixed using a self-tapper to the inner wing - lets down the whole wiring system.

It should run off the fog light wiring, believe you can alter the settings to come on with sidelights or main beam, why don't you check it and see if it works with a 5W bulb first, check the fuse rating in RAVE, imagine its driven from the BECM via a relay in the engine compartment or somewhere.

Are you sure that your kit was a genuine one?

The genuine kit has a black relay stamped with Land Rover on it, the conector to the rear of the headlight has Land Rover stamped on it, the whole of the wiring is encased in shrink tubing and is totally profesional with no nasty connectors as you have described.

It couldn't have been genuine then, it was nasty!!!

Im going to get my local off road specialist to do mine. there excellent. thay have carried out a few jobs on mine and are very knowledgable as they are expedition specialists. you may have heard of them. very reasonable and parts are very cheap. The Expedition Specialists based in Peterborough very easy to get to.

The Safari 5000 lamps are genuine Land Rover and are a simple fit with the genuine Land Rover wiring kit (see previous post)

They look nice but are expensive. They are made buy Hella on licence. If you are not concerned if they are genuine or not, Hella have some great lamps out at the moment, you probably have seen some of them on the big trucks, and a bit cheaper as well.
