This bit that wears is a horseshoe shaped notch if you like.
There is a pin that sits within the horseshoe bit which probably wears but the catching of the handle is caused by the horseshoe notch wearing.

Reinforce the horseshoe with some thin sacrificial brass strip, glued in if necessary?

Maybe not brass, but some sort of thin metal lining glued in place.

Used to be able to get shimming brass , very thin and flexible , dont know if you can still get it though , just an idea !

I've done that in the past to fit a rear wheel bearing in a fractionally worn Moto Guzzi rear wheel. Worked well.
