Front Diff slack in power train Def.110 MOD

Weirdly land rover diffs have some of the largest amounts of rotational play I have ever come across and as said above is quite normal.

Places to check are wheel drive members for wear and the tfer box input gear if it has one.
 
Thanks for the input. I replaced my transfer case and gearbox. before it Was banging (in rear end I think) when backing up. On the day I was driving to the shop to replace Gearbox and TC the front wheel locked up and skidded on the road. Backed up and it unlocked. Would this be a Front diff problem, or more likely in the transfer case diff lock?
 
A wheel jamming could be various things. Wheel bearing and or CV joint spring to mind. Yes, diffs sometimes fail and jam but I think the bearing or CV joint is more likely. We had intermittent wheel binding on our old Series, which turned out to be the roller bearings breaking up. On an ancient Vauxhall Viva a friend of mine had, a front wheel locked and it turned out that he had lost a bolt on one of the front brake calipers. On application of the brake the caliper had swing inwards and jammed against the hub. I don't think Land Rover's have enough movement to do this.
 
Guys (I think) thanks for the information. Diagnosis is an art... and unfortunately I can't paint. Will look at the front end this weekend. The year is 97 defender 110 MOD. Originally had the 2.5 with the Lt77.
 
While changing gearbox and transfer case noticed extreme play in my front diff. Driveshaft rotates like 25 degrees. Cause? Solution?
just recently i had a similar thing to yours I had lots of back lash but I had a clunk when de accelerating ....when I dropped the oils on the diffs the front diff was full of metal... you can adjust the back lash in the diffs but if the diff housing is worn and the centre pin has been moving the diff housing is no good mine dollyed around that much the centre pin started to walk out lucky for me I checked the oil and magnetic drain plug

Well worth adding your rough location as you will be surprised what help is out there and theres always someone who will have a look see for you.
 
So, found rear wheel bearings destroyed. Found play in wheel and removed wheel etc, Bearings destroyed. If you've read my threads I was so busy doing, motor and transmission and TC didn't get around to wheel bearings. I'm praying that was the problem.
 
Sadly you will find wheel bearings will be a constant bane of your life, my 200 eats them even the decent Timken ones, and if you off road it with deep water thats defo going to chew them up even with new seals and new stub axle.
