I,m sure this a simple job, but, after some reading, I,ve got a couple of questions.

Is it better to get an OEM seal rather than a Britpart one ?.

And is there a set measurment/distance that the new seal has to be pressed into ?. ( as I,ve read that this is critical ).

Lastly. How do you check to see if your axle breather is blocked ?.

As with all these things, I have done quite a bit of " searching ", but been unable to find a definate answer.

Cheers.

usually pressed in so flush with nose casing.
long as its not "sqewiff" and the seal ring runs true and isnt damaged, should be allright.
the original leather seal would be best, dont know what make britpart sells.
should be able to pick one up from a bearing suppliers if you know what dimesions it is. (i dont know without lookin at one)

axle breather never checked on a disco. presume they unscrew and you can blow down them?

I've only done my rear one but the front is the same so look at the existing seal before u remove it, it's recessed by a milimetre or two so the new one should be the same when fitted. Use the old seal to drive in the new one
I would fit a genuine part seal unless you wish to do the job again in 2 or 3 years time,

I don't know where the leather seals came from, perhaps on vehicles from the 1930's but not a disco that's for sure :D

1. My money is on genuine seal too

2. u don't have to concern yourself about the distance... the new seal will go just untill it's place.......just dont force it when u feel it stopped

3. take out the oil level plug from diff, connect a pump to the breather tube's open end(is located in the left rear corner of the engine compartment) then ask somebody to pump air into it....put your ear near the filler hole........if the tube isnt clogged u'll hear the air's sound gurgling........anyway if it's clogged then u'll feel that's hard to pump in it.

Thanks for the feedback fellas.

Simple enough job, ( you,d think ! ).

Ended up doing it twice thanks to a poor quality Britpart seal, ( so answered one of my own questions there ), but did it early enough to be able to " nip " to main dealer for genuine one. ( £ 8.55 as appose to £ 5.00 !!! ).

What I did to get it to the correct seat depth was cut a washer/shim out of 1.5 mm " high load " DPC, ( damp proof course from building site ), carefully tap new seal in flush to casing using the old seal, then slide the flange back on and thighten the nut down thus pushing the new seal in squarely.

Before I took the old seal out I noted that it sat about 1.5 mm back from the line, ( clearly seen as a " shiny " line in the casing ), of the flange.

What I then did was take the flange back off and put the washer/shim I,d made against the new seal and then tighten the flange back down.

Obviously I then took the flange back of and took out my washer/shim happy that the new seal was in the same place as the old one.

Put it all back together, no more leak.

My advise would be DO NOT USE A BRITPART SEAL. ( you wont save £ 3.55, you,ll waste a fiver ! ).

I took some pics. ( if it might help someone ).

Cheers.

Well done 50 pence with the DPC spacer thats neat, save it as u may need it for the rear...one day.:)

I was interested in the white cabinets in pic2 I use to use them as marshaling boxes.

Sorry for being dumb, but what do you mean ?.

They,re kitchen units from Ikea !.

Good job well done mate.

I used britpart seals and they were identical to original, viton brown n all. This was on a 200 however with the square flange, so they may be different.

Nice one for sorting it without help though :D
