How much do you guys reckon this will cost me to get replaced at a local independant LR garage?

Thought I'd clouted the diff itself as there was some oil (not a lot) appearing to diff from the bottom of the casing. Closer inspection shows it's leaking from the pinion oil seal :(

this is a real easy diy job.just unbolt the prop, unbolt the drive flange, prise out the old seal clean up where the new seal will fi and gently and evenly tap the new seal home.check that the flange is not worn grease it up and bolt it back up.re attatch the prop job done half hour tops.

Is it really that easy for a 'novice'? Haynes manual looks a bit tricky, but what you describe doesn't sound too bad? Would I need ramps or 4 axle stands?

it should be ok to do with the front raised on two axle stands(just make sure you drain the oil out of the diff or it may well run out all over).if you can beg, borrow or steal a cordless impact drill and the pinion nut will come off a treat(30mm socket i think).just get stuck in 5 years ago i was a complete numpty on the servicing side but a defender and a disco later i am now confident enough to carry out most jobs and start building my own westfield.

give it a go but dont be surprised if you cant undo the 1" casstellated (sp?) nut. mine was rock tight and i couldnt undo it. my 90 was rocking back around 2ft with me on the breaker bar!

if you get a garage to do it, it will cost you around an hr labour. try to incorporate it into other things if you drop it off at a garage as this will work out cheaper. no rush with a pinion oil seal, just keep the diffs topped up with ep90.
