Front pinion oil seal

I need to change the front diff pinion oil seal (behind the flange that connects to the forward prop). It looks like a pig of a job. Most people seem to use a piece of tubing to knock the new one in with. Can anyone tell me the diameter of pipe that I will need? As far as I can see there is not a dedicated tool for this that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Is it just the seal you are replacing ?
You should be able to get it out without much damage to the outer rim.

I just use the old one to tap the new one in ....

Last time I did mine it came out no problem by hammering a screwdriver through it. I have also seen it done where you put a wood screw through it and then use a claw hammer. it should not be difficult to remove the seal. To refit I also used the old seal as the drift, and may have then used a box spanner to get it to the correct depth (it has been a while)

I think it will just be the seal. I will use the old one as you suggest. Thank you.

An old bearing race makes a good seating tool.

Check the seal face on the flange itself, they wear a groove when worn, new flanges used to be cheap not sure now though!
