Anybody changed the oil on an FL2 td4, where is the oil filter located and does it require any special tool?
Damned if I could find it and the only likely candidate I found I didn't have a spanner for and it was a **** to get to, had to put new oil in with old filter. bugger!
Oh and does anybody know how to reset the service indicator?

Err, not sure if I found it, well not 100% any way, would like some more guidance on this one.

The oil filter is basically a pig to get to. Front of the engine, low down, sandwiched behind the radiator fans and engine block with some pipwork thrown in to make it even more difficult. Not changed mine yet but I understand it’s the same idea as the FL1 TD4 where you have a plastic housing and a paper filter. Nut size is something like 27 / 28mm but not 100% sure.
I’ve heard rumours that some mechanics who are not familiar with this model cannot be bothered changing the filter at services because its difficult to get to although you should be OK with a LR dealer or good independent as they will do these every day. You pay your money……….
Regards,
Chris

I think the oil filter housing on the FL2 TD4 is a smaller size socket than the FL1 TD4 (it looks it). On my old FL1 I used a wheel hub nut socket to remove the oil filter housing but on the FL2 there isn’t the same access to get a larger socket in. Maybe a good quality ring spanner will work. The main problem I have found in the short time I’ve owned my FL2 is that no workshop manuals seem to be available so I don’t know much about the location of service items. This may change as more FL2s come out of warranty and are no longer taken to main agents for service (Something may get published). Mine is still under warranty until next summer so I may seek out an independent in my area, Blackpool / Preston, for the main service (although I tend to change the oil and 6 Mths / 6K Miles myself in addition to the main service).
Also, be aware of the oil viscosity, I think it’s something like 5W40 semi -synthetic. The dealer who supplied my FL2 uses Castrol but stated that the exact oil used was not easily available in the high street. On my FL1, I used Millers 10W40 semi-synthetic all the time.

Your nearly right about the oil for the fl2, it's 5w/30 but it is now manufacturer specific ie; Ford,Volkswagen etc, but you can get it from Halfords and their own brand, it meets all the requirements

What you need is one of these ;)

Cost me £30, but worth its weight in gold for FL2 oil filters :D

Mikey,

From your post it seems you have done a few FL2s.

What size nut is on the filter housing (so I can get a spanner) and is it better to remove the filter from underneath?

Chris

Have done a fair few, yes ;)

Spanner is 27mm, and best accessed from underneath. Just let it drain before taking it right out the hole, or oil will drain down your arm

£13 spent on ebay for spanner, nice one, still a bit of a bitch of a job to get to filter though.
What do you know about the fuel filter on these beasts, like where is it and how hard is that?

Found the oil filter ok and my 27mm socket fits a treat but not enough room for the ratchet arm, Out with the 27mm ring spanner and the arm is too long to get access. Before I rush out to buy another 27mm ring spanner can you advise on a brand or make that will do the trick? how about a ratchet ring spanner, tend to be flat and have no angle at the ring? By this time i had drained and refilled the oil and will have to start again as the car was needed.

Just right, 27mm ring spanner, oil 5w30 full sentetic, I have shop manual freelander2 in pdf
