Hello i have just purchased a 1998 Freelander L series with a fault , the car starts fine and ticks over but soon as you apply revs it expels thick white diesel smelling smoke .
I have been told by the previuos owner that it has a Code Fault 144 can anyone shed any light on this i.e is it the fuel pump or could it be something to do with the injectors ??
Look forward to any help that can be provided ..

Hi my freelander L series starts ok and ticks over fine but soon as revs are applied it emmits thick white diesel smelling smoke i have been told it has fault code 144 can anyone give me further info as to weather it could be the diesel pump or the electric injectors which are at fault ?
Thanks for any help given

Code 144 is a timing deviation in the bosch VP fuel pump attached to the engine.

Does it only rev to about 1500 RPM? You could try disconnecting the MAF - see if that helps.

Hi thanks for that i have already disconnected the MAS and makes no differance it revs to about 1500 then starts to missfire and smokes like crazy..

if its a timing deviation - then get the fuel pump timing checked?

tiz not summat I am familiar with tho - yu need someone with more hippoo doozil experience. Eightinavee or NI or Ming?

Thanks for that i have tried checking the pump timing but difficult to find the hole that locks the crankshaft(in flywheel) I Know it,s somewhere behind the gearbox but need to get the car up on some lifts to gain access i think.
Do you happen to know if i would need to recode the fuel pump if i fit a new one ?
