Hi All,
I have recently purchased a facelift Freelander 2.5 V6 with 50k miles. I'm having a problem with the car where on tight corners there is a vibration coming from the center of the car underneath.

The following work has been done so far to try to remedy it:
  • The VCU has not long been replaced.
  • Rear diff mountings.
  • VCU Bearings
The VCU bearings fitted were Bearmach and once fitted the problem seemed to pretty much go away with only the slightest of vibrations that could be felt. My wife drove it for over 100 miles and it was back to the way it was again.

My local Land Rover specialist thinks that it is the VCU bearings still.

I have disconnected the prop and ran in 2wd only mode and the vibration is not there.

The one thing that is wrong is that the front joint where the prop joins on to the IRD has wept all of its grease out.

Im left with thinking it could be one of the following:

  1. Bearmach VCU bearings are crap.
  2. What are the symptoms of a faulty rear diff?
  3. Could the front gaitor having lost most of its grease be causing this?
Sorry for the long post!

Thanks

We sometimes get vcu's jumping about if the rubber holding the vcu bearings in place is weak. This happens when turning left or right slowly. Do you have a small camcorder you could fix under yer hippo to record the bearing movement in the rubber when turning slowly?

No I dont, there is more movement in the front bearing rubber than the rear one. It sounds like Bearmach VCU Bearings may just be a cheap part. It definitely feels like its vibrating from the vcu area, you can feel it if you place your hand on the transmission tunnel.

What make of VCU bearings do you recommend?

I will only fit genuine VCU bearings as after market versions simply don't last.
However the fact that the front props CV joint has lost its grease won't help the propshaft rotate smoothly.
