Hi,
I've got a problem with my 2001 V6 petrol freelander(bet you have heard that before). I've changed the themostat, replaced expansion tank and cap and there is no water in the oil.
It still overheats when running slow in a traffic jam or just ticking over and the fans are working OK. The top hose is hot and bottom hose is cool!

Did a run of of about 30 miles yesterday and temp gauge kept shooting up to high then came back down again this happened about 10 times. I also think the heater in the car pushed out much hotter air for a few seconds...does this point to an air blockege in the system(or is it me imagining things!!!!)

Any sensible idea's on how to fix problem would be welcome.

Many thanks.B

any one know where to find a layout of the 2002 2.5 kv6 engine, got a great mec., who can do most things but needs to see a layout of this mess of an engine before he has a go at it, help appreciated

Yes it looses about 1.5 liters of water on a run of 5 - 10 miles. I'm unable to see where the water is going! No water in oil and no obvious leaks. I've bled the system cold many, many times When running both top and bottom hoses are hot so water must be circulating. I don't trust local garages I think I need a specialist who understands theses cars. HELP!

Suggest you post your location if you are looking for recommendations. Don't forget quite a few Rover 75's had the V6 so Rover people may be able to help. Go to mg-rover.org for the Rover web site.

My V6 used to loose about a pint and the fans would come on.
Water pump and/or thermostat housing./Plastic pipe between pump and housing. Take off your air filter housing so you can see between the inlet manifold castings, if there is water in the casting wells in the V of the engine ( the pump and thermostat housing sits above this V ) that could be your problem. I had it on mine and cured it with rad weld over a year ago with no problems. Although a lot of threads don't recomend this as they say it blocks water ways.
Ran with rad weld for a couple of years before I fixed it properly.Check this thread.

On my V6 I had two leaking problems ...

First cost me new engine: Leaking heater matrix in cabin ... check if you have on other side wet/sticky floor ...

Second: just loosing coolant and have to change inlet gaskets ... Now for about 10.00km all OK ...

the problem is the V6 engine. No-one in their right mind buys one - definately not in Africa .

match!

It's true.
I bought one, but then I'm not in my right mind.

More helpfully, you could well have an airlock.
Check the bottom radiator hose to see if it gets hot.
If not you definitely have circulation problems, maybe an airlock.
It will need bleeding but that's very tricky to do properly.
I'm having the same problem right now and I'm not even in Africa!

when you park you will find that no water.

Whoops just saw that part!

I would say you either have a split hose or a busted gasket.

First check all the coolant hoses. They get brittle over time and split, especially the small ones.
The small one that runs along with the top radiator hose is a favourite - I think it's called "Inlet manifolds expansion pipe" (workshop manual page 26-3-2)

Is it losing oil? Is there any muck on the oil filler cap? (inside)

Nothing wrong with the KV6!! It's poor maintenance and lack of understanding that kill em most of the time. If the thermostat was a bit better then they would last but iirc that was BMW's contribution to the design :(
