Got a 53 plate freelander td4 sport with boost problems.
Firstly it happened as I pulled out the petrol station, when pulling away there was no boost from turbo so lack of power so thought Id drive home and have a quick look when driving home the revs kept dropping and rising. Turned engine off had a quick look nothing out of the ordinary turned back on was fine after that, but after a hour or so driving I booted it a little down a slip road and same thing happened. Turned it off turned back on fine again.
Suggestions?
 
The ECU is going in to 'limp mode' for some reason, turning it off resets the ECU until whatever triggered limp mode triggers it again. You really need to get the ECU read to see if it has logged any fault codes.
 
no codes are coming up.
im hoping it isn't sticking vanes in the turbo looks a horrible job to remove and refit, going to change the solenoid on the turbo tomorrow see what that does.
ive cleaned around the maf which wasn't dirty, but as the symptoms are only coming on when you drive it faster I would have thought the problem is mechanical as if it was electrical the problem would be there all the time
 
On VNT turbos generally once you disconnect the actuator the operating arm on the turbo should move freely. If it is stiff then that is probably your problem and it is an overboost causing the issued. You may be able to free it off by 'exercising' the arm to scrape the carbon build up off inside the turbo body. Its generally caused by owners (the previous one by the sound of it) not giving it a good thrash every so often to keep the mechanism moving. a VNT will stay in the full boost position until maximum boost is achieved then the control system tries to move the arm on the turbo to reduce the boost pressure, if you never get to full boost the arm wont move and it all just gets stuck in place through a build up of carbon. Obviously that's assuming there is no issue with the actuator.
