hi guys, im fairly new to the site and have read through a lot of the posts in an effort to see if anyone has a similar problem to myself, but i havent found one yet , so hear goes,

my Td4 has developed a rather severe wobble on tickover and it also seems to lack power, especially when pulling away
i have given it a service, oil change, air/oil and fuel filters, i cleaned the rocker cover filter, the egr valve, and replaced the maf sensor and fitted a roveron tuning box,
the rocking engine on tickover is still there, the tuning box seems to help a little ,, have i missed somthing or can anyone suggest my next course of action ? im loathed to take it to a dealer.

i did have a thought about it being a dodgy air pressure sensor in the plenum chamber (map sensor) as when i looked in the chamber it was quite oiled up,would this cause this problem any help appriciated

john t.

its difficult to belive i have the only td4 that has got this rocking engine on tickover syndrome?
anyways , has anyone had to replace the manifold air pressure sensor (map) and if it were faulty what symptons would it cause ,
any thoughts?

check yer three turbo inlet rubbers [normaly get smoke] also check yer vacuum filter is not blocked [back er engine lhs] looks like an old fashioned fuel filter [glass type ,but this is plastic] failing that decompresion valve filter is clogged up [should be changed bout 35000 miles [but nobody bothers]. . . . .un best oh luck earthling. . . .:)

I have had the same problem.A friend in the rac said it may be a temperature sensor causing an upset to the injector feed.Thankfully this problem was intermittant and hasent occured latly

thanks for them ideas, i will have a look, , the temp sensor could be a good lead, have already checked the vacuum filter and decompression filter ( cleaned it) , but i might renew that now ,will keep you posted ,

p.s. when i say tickover wobbley, it is quite severe

John,
I recently had my tank fuel pump fail with near catastrophic results! since it has been replaced I have had no wobbly tickover(engine sounded like a sack of bolts.)Worth a look?
Rob

hey guys , im getting confused here,
Ming , the turbo inlet rubbers you mentioned, are you refering to the conecting pipework, or the vacuum boost solenoid pipes?, i had a look under the engin and everything around the turbo looks good,

now the issues with having a dodgy tank fuel pump , as i understand the system it has two pumps, the other next to the fuel filter, and i can hear this operating when i switch on the ignition ,runs for about 10 sec.
which pump produces the critical prressure to the common rail?
so if the fuel pump was at fault how would i check this out, its a bit costly to be replacing it if its not broke , and if it were a dodgy pump, would the engine still run at full load ?

wishing i had a tractor

Sorry to throw the fuel pump into the equation.I just thought I'd mention it as my freelander was showing the same symptoms as yours. If you can hear your pump when you start the ignition(tank end )Its proberbly ok
Rob

rob , thanks for you input, any suggestions are welcome , there are possibly several things that it might be, just a case of going through the systems and elimination i hope

update on the wobbley tickover,

having checked all the easy stuff, i found a vacuum pipe to the erg valve worn through, with this sorted, the tickover was only slightly better but still bad,

i now got it down to the no2 injector , when i pull the lead off it has no effect , so looks like it is suspect

dose anyone think injector cleaner would work, or do i just replace it for a new one , £190 ouch where the best place to get um cheeper ?

Maybe better to try first whether you can get the faulty one out before you go and buy a new one??:(

My 03 TD4 was showing the same symtoms and was only running on 3 cylinders. Check for signs of burning on the plug as mine was faulty

I new wiring loom to the 4 injectors solved the problem and the part was only £30

Cant complain as its the only fault in 3.5 years and 68,000 miles

check the post in the Td4 turbo cutting out thread. i had the same problem, its probably the fuel presure sensor, but could be bad injectors. best thing to do is find a good diesel. i would even bother ith the stealership, they just drew a blank

This vaccum filter - changed mine, but when taking the old one off seemed only to be connected on one end - replaced with new one, but is this right? Should it have pipes on both ends of filter? If so no idea where other (lower) pipe is - it's a bastard to get to in the first place.

norbet,, the vacuum filter only has one pipe connected ,

injector cleaner sorted out my wobbley tickover problem
