we have just bought second hand freelander td4 02 plate we just want to know how the 4 weel drive system works? can anyone help???? many thanks.:)

Front wheels lose traction & start to spin, fluid in viscous coupling starts to heat up & hydraulically locks & transmits the drive to the rear albeit at slightly lower speed thanks to the ird gearing (this takes place very very quickly). This means that during normal driving only a small amount of drive goes to the rear wheels & is available only when needed assuming all driveline components are working ok which is supposed to help fuel economy though it probably makes little difference.
All automatic & mechanical without any electronic sensors etc.

short version of chromium's post is:

it's all completely automatic, just drive it, same with traction control if fitted, just happens, can't turn it on and off, it just does it.

Hil descent control has to be switched on and off though.

if you don't have the manual, you could search for Rave CD, which is a cross between haynes manual and owners manual, all the owners manual info is in it.

good luck and welcome, the forum is a bit lively at times, but thick skin will get you all the answers you need.
