Finally back! Some one nicked or binned my keys when I was at my parents house. So I had various talks to landrover about key codes, about keys been recut etc....anyway a lot of hassle later, a garage said they reprogram a new key in...! Cut to months later and the spare key was found in the loft after months of searching and no one been able to program a new one in!
While it enjoyed a break at the garage it came back with a new tow bar.......

I'm sick of trusting garages, so I've a list of jobs to do longer than the freelander. I'm hoping some one may help with advice, I haven't touched a car in 15 years as restoring my mini put me off working on cars!

The tow bar works great but since having it back I've noticed the rear upper lights don't work, my rear window doesn't go back up when the door is shut (neither does it go down). The switch to the rear window seems like it has no power. The door does open and shut. I'm guessing these are connected somehow..?

I've been looking at a diagnostic machine for a tenner on eBay will one of these help to pin point problems?

This is my primary concern as water is leaking in through the window but it's the first of many jobs!

Cheers in advance for any help
Andrew

Re' your upper rear lights - they are the fog and reversing lights and won't normally be on. The tail/brake and indicator lights are in the bumper.
£10 tester? you get what you pay for.
Rear door glass up/down, check fuse/s. Operating the door's handle will drop the glass a few mm and allow the door to open. When shut it will lift again.

Depends on the year of your car as to whether the code reader will work. For £10 its going to be a generic ODBII jobbie and it won't do anything on an 'early' Freelander. Later ones you might have more luck, but even then it will possibly only talk to the engine, not CCU, ABD, SRS etc. You'll need a Freelander specific device with prices starting at about £100. As above - "you get what you pay for" is very true for Freelander diag kit.

If the battery has been disconnected, you'll need to calibrate the back window. Have a search on here - there's plenty of instructions/help.

I bought a £60 OBD reader as I didn't trust the £10 ones. It was awful, badly made, unreliable and in the end it went up in a puff of smoke! My advice don't bother.

Cheers,
I've had a look the cable in the rear door has snapped. I've tried the calibration, it beeps so I think it's down to the window?

I know they were cheap, the scanners but I didn't know if the prices had dropped. I'll stay clear!

I have a dead motor in my rear near side door so it could be the motor, I had to fix the other three too but they had broken cables and a missing motor. It's pretty easy to remove the regulator and replace it but use a multimeter first to confirm it is getting power. If you want to get the regulator out but can't get the window down you can just get to the bolt which holds the regulator to the glass (not easy but helps if you have bendy ratchet spanners). Once this is out then the other two or three are easy.
Take a look at my thread and the list of jobs to do, it might make you feel a bit betterer.
