Freelander Problems Help Needed

We own a 1999 Freelander XDI and although its a great car we are experiencing some problem.

1. When we pull away there is a screaching noise from under the bonnet.
Is this a fan belt (if they have one) that needs tightening?

2. When we change to 2nd gear and pull away there is a Clonk coming from the rear of the car?
It only clonk once when you pull away.

Any help on how to rectify these problem would be great.

1.oil or contamination on aux belt, or dodgy tensioner

2.rear centre diff mount, about £15 from lr dealer

That cheap

took me about 1.5 hrs to do rear mount myself! you do have to lower the rear subframe about 10-15mm, BUT do not need to remove it, just unwind the bolts that hold it to the chassis the ddesired amount, no neeed to remove bolts!
belt is a spring loaded tensioner, so either it has gone duff, or belt is buggered/contaminated, easily dianosed, by putting a 15mm spanner (iirc) on the tensioner, and seeing whether it is doing its job!

thems em! lie underneath and grab the rear diff, and push it up and down at the front edge, you will see it is fecked! when i changed mine, the LR dealer said that it was their best seller!

Is ther just the 2 bolts that hold the Subframe up 1 at either end?
I only have the jack that came with the car so can it be done by just jacking up the drivers side?

I managed to change mine without unding the subframe....

I undid the bolts that hold the rear diff to all three mountings and then shuffled the diff out of the way whilst I removed the front mount.

Took about half an hour at most.

As regards the vehicle jack - do not use this!! Use a trolley or bottle jack and axle stands to support whilst working underneath!!

I've just had to change mine recently, and I'll agree with Steve. It takes a bit of shuvin about but you should be able to do the job by wiggling the diff around and pulling the mounts out at the same time. Good idea is to get a mate to help. Straight forward undo and do-up nuts and bolts job and gives great satisfaction when it's done.

I bought all three and upon inspection only the centre mount had perished.

My advice would be to change the front (centre) one first and see if this solves the problem. If its a cluncking when pulling off then it is the front mount. When really worn it allows the diff flange to move and touch the fuel tank sheild. This in turn causes a scraping noise when pulling off.
