Freelander problem - overheating

Hi!

Had a problem with overheating with my V6 Freelander ...

And with bad luck I destroyed engine ... 1 head got stuck and destroyed ...

Reason??? No coolant in system ... Heater matrix leaking ... :confused:

I got new/exchange engine and till now (about 25.000km) no problem exept that I have to change inlet manifold gaskets because of again coolant leaking.

As some of you have mentioned, there is a baaaaaaad air flow around head witch is on bulkhead side ...

I am planning to do some air flow round this head but I don't now how?

Any idea?
 
I have V6 from new (year 2000) - yes HG under warranty before 12months old !

Thought maybe same again similar symptoms 68000 miles- told it was fine pressure test and they run hot so just top up !

Took to independent 4x4 dealear expecting the worst - they rang me same day and said fixed - thermostat failed shut giving boiling symptoms, black bits in coolant bottle and funny smells entering cabin (it wasn't me !)
So fingers crossed

They are marvellous creatures the V6s - what the Freelander always should have been

Do you know how to bleed the system?
Look behine the engine cover, you will see a couple of rubber hoses.
One will have a screw fitting on it.
If possible park your Landy on a steepish incline tail up.
Run it for a few minutes until engine warms up.
With it running open the screw slightly, a glove or similar would be helpful watch your hands very hot coolant will start to flow, hopefully with air!!
You will need to let the liquid flow gently, no more than a trickle for approximately 30seconds. You will need to do this several times to clear the air, over a period of days.
When you switch it off listen to the cooling system, you will most likely hear air rushing around in it. Your patience will hopefully clear this.
Other options are to have it vacuam filled, but in my experience you will still end up with some air.
Have it sniffed to check the head gasket, a process were some vapour is collected when the engine is warm and can detect engine gasses.
This engine sadly does run warm no matter what the gauge says.

Read all this stuff about HGs - similar problem with mine BUT as bottom hose was cold between engine and radiator it was found that thermostat failed shut - apparently happens
New thermostat and all is fine - so all/most symptoms of HG failure but not !

Hope this helps people that are fed all this bad info - perhaps person that had HG fixed then 'went again' 2 weeks later did not have HG failure in first place !

Vehicle now done 71000 from new - 2000 model and HG done in first year but that is all - they are great !

Independent 4x4 dealer sorted mine !

I've got exactly the same problem with my 2001 V6 petrol freelander. I've changed the themostat, replaced expansion tank and cap and there is no water in the oil.
It still overheats when running slow in a traffic jam or just ticking over and the fans are working OK. Again same as you top hose is hot and bottom hose is cool!

Did you manage to find out what the problem is?

Or can anyone else give advice or been through the same pain!

Incidentally is it possible that all these problems are happening after the engine has been out for the cam / timing belts to be changed at 60k / 5 years
May be the engine KV6 does need bleeding as reply above because it apparently is a so and so for air locks but it seems dealers not too aware / careful when reassembling after this engine out service !

I am now going to try this as mine still gurgles after switching off and looses a small amount of coolant through cap
Otherwise still going wonderfully at 76k - and so it should !

are there any cold spots in the radiator - ie - is it blocked anywhere?

why not take it back to the seller and get yo money back?

Simply most people who have a good knowledge of the landrover are happy to advise people who have less knowledge. The benefits of having sites like this. The ones with helpful comments are a mass of knowledge. I'm absolutely positive you had your first landy at some point and had no idea of its gremlins.
Why do some people come on with a negative attitude to people asking a sensible question????
 
Finding my way so to speak . I do appreciate banter though. These bloody hippos are a ****emare though. I'm having to fork out on one my wife just bought because petrol is cheaper than diesel these days .

A rover engine in a landy, go figure. Gone from bullet proof diesel to a massive failure of the K engine.
Had mine for 9 years and its been boringly reliable. The WOF (MOT) man got so bored passing my 20 year old Land Rover, that he failed it on Monday, cos it had a bit of fluff on the seat belt.

Mind you it does have a bullet proof L Series diesel.

You're rather unkind to the K Series though, sure it needs TLC on the head gasket, but other than that its a reliable and pretty efficient lump.

There's loads of info on the site about head gaskets on K Series. I'm no expert but I think them's in the know say to check liner heights first before deciding on what type of gasket to use.

Don't wish to alarm you either, but it appear lots of Scoootish Freelanders rust out at the front of the rear wheel arches behind the plastic liners, and it spreads out down the sill to. Shame its so bloody cold up there and there's lots of salt put down.

Many thanks. I had noticed a good bit of rust on the main sub frame although nothing to serious. A bit surprised as the engine guard is still in situ and in good condition. The sills are in good condition at the moment for a 2005. The salt they put on the roads is ridiculous up here, not forgetting the chips in the paintwork as we pass the gritter spraying out the back. I'll stick to my discovery 2 rather than the hippo. Suppose we all take a liking to certain versions though. My father would never walk past the early defender. Probably where I got my hobby from. I'll have a look round and do a bit of reading, just noticed a caged roofrack for the three door so the bugger is I'm already looking to upgrade her hippo as much as possible.
Does seem to overheat when she's driving though, but I think there may be an air lock in the system, cold lower radiator hose after running a while. Once all the little things are done it should be a fun wee thing for the Mrs. Hopefully get her to sell her impreza. Not holding my breath for that one.
