Freelander problem - overheating

Seriously.
KV6's are notorious for HGF.
Yours is overheating and, apparently, pressurising - classic symptoms and exactly what mine did.
If you can find someone to replace the HGs, they probably won't warranty the job and it may well go again (mine lasted 2 weeks).
If you take it to a LR main dealer they will say you need a new engine, which will cost you £4k at least.

I say again - take it back and get a refund.

Spent ages compiling a sarcastic reply to this earlier and seems to have been either lost in cyberspace or removed...

In brief it said how the fook can you diagnose a problem by a couple of lines of brief description... (im not saying it is or is not because if I were that good I would be making a business from it) ..If I had a couple of quid for every time sombody has suggested HGF on mine (still running perfectly 40K miles later) when its been either electrickrey, thermostat, or anything else not associated with HGF then I could happily retire...

Just cause head gasket had gone on yours (so you were probably informed by some forum expert) doesnt mean its gonna be the same in every case... i have seen 3 FLs recently that owners (obviously suffering from FL paranoia) have been convinced by forum experts that HGF was cause for coolant loss....each one was simple leaks you could get in any motor.

Do the basics... sludge/emulsion in and around oil filler cap & dipstick...sniff test for hydro-carbons in coolant... Change filler cap to ensure system is pressurising and not just boiling at atmospheric pressure

Didn't Hatters say all this in post #11?

Couldn't agree more doobrey.....but if you've got a v6 get ready to eat yer words, cos sooner or later she'll bite you with HGF. Put it this way, if yer can find a v6 with 100k on the clock that HASNT had either at least 2 sets of HG's or a new lump fitted, I'll eat me laptop.

By the way, I loved my Xedi, I did 165k in the old gal, but if you asked me if I was gonna get another, answer'd be no way...sitting there waiting for IRD/VCU/Rear dif failure/window actuator/ ruined tyres/clutch failure ain't much fun.And even if you get the parts yourself, it ain't cheap. I haven't got a downer on GL's, just realistic.:(

You will get used to Statler and Waldorf Statler and Waldorf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (and their sidekicks) on here....seems to me that its somthing to do with being neglected during childhood ;) Either that or the fact they just dont understand the complexities of modern (beyond cart spring) motors:D

Doobrey - I had a freelander - full service history only 2 owners - KV6. decided i wouldnt have a 1.8 because of HGF worries.

I had mine 13 months - spent £6500 in REPAIRS in that time including new prop, HGF, cracked subframe mount etc. As Trewy and I have said many times - we have been bitten once and that is once too many times.

It is your money. You might be lucky. Good luck to you. Ignore our words of warning, tho, at your peril. There are too many bad stories out there for it to be jealousy or bad luck.

If you aint noticed I dont really take that much notice of TMHs posts....Mine has needed work....new lpg system replaced under warranty(was told that was hgf) new thermostat (told that was hgf) did get a bad airlock (told that was hgf) Not saying I wont have probs nor am I burying head in sand but have heard the same old song so many times its fookin boring....

2 HGF or new lump by 100k...make it official is that miles or kilometers???

I'll go for miles, also for £'s in repair bills....:p

However, there's gotta be one out there that'll do it....surely by law of numbers/averages.....please?

Just fort, all those bits you had done, was that at a main Landy dealership? if yes, I'm not suprised....

Right, I've only read a few words of the first post, I saw "V6" and this is in the freelander section.

My advise and I'm sure floppys put his two pence worth in, BREAK IT FOR SPARES AND FLOG THE PARTS ON EBAY, YOU'LL MAKE MORE THIS WAY THAN SELLING IT AS NOONE WANTS A V6 FREELANDER.

Forget fixing it as it'll **** up again, dey is ****, man.
hee hee
Statler and Waldorf may be vindicated yet....:D

Fixed, scroll to previous page...........
This is a strange one, I've never heard of a v6 overheating before. I'd check to make sure the fan fuse isn't blown.

For those that are interested, the car seems okay now. We replaced the expansion tank cap, so maybe that was the problem? (have no idea seeing as I know nothing about cars) we're still making up our minds as to whether we sell the car or not...we really like it but obviously don't want something that's going to cost the earth to go wrong with it.
