Any ideas gratefully revieved ( apart from matches and petrol)

Ahh, thats the fundamental question. Security is handled by the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the Engine Control unit (ECU). One of them is not satisfied the transponder in your key is checking out. Given that it just cut out, I would suspect a connector around the dashboard area or in the engine bay.

I don't have a 1.8 Hippo, mines a L series diesel, so I'm not that familiar with this system. Hopefully, someone who has experienced this will be able to advise. i'm sure I've seen something like this recently so it might be worth doing a search of the site.

One thing you could try is your spare key, just in case..

Good luck.

Hi 520222,
"when it just stopped dead whilst mid drive"
Had this soon after I got my Rover 400 (based on same lump as yours) and it was the Inertia Switch.
Disconnects power to fuel pump and ECU when it thinks you have crashed? Mine just did it's own thing.
Find the switch on a bulkhead in the engine bay (has a round rubber cover over the top of the push switch) and give it a press to reset it, won't hurt if it ain't the problem but may make all the dead stuff come back to life if your lucky?
Give it a go. TD John

CURED!!!!!!!!!!!! Many thanks to those who responded and for those who may read this thread with the same problem it was the main fuse 15o amp blown causing intermitant fault caused by a broken live wire on the loom near the alternator rubbing on the power steering pulley. Many Thanks again and happy days till next problem

Good, trade it in for something decent you can get 2 grand for it now 10 times more than it was worth brand new.
