Thing is LRN402 is £22 more eggspensive for 5L at approx £62.50. A recon auto fitted costs £1500 + vat. Having had one replaced I wont be taking the risk fer £22 extra.

Hippo,
you are not seeing the point, you are paying 22 quid extra for the land rover name on the bottle. If you have read the ad fully on Rimmer Bros it even states it is for the JF506E gearbox.

I do get the point. But if you pay £22 more you know your getting the correct stuff. Having searched online using the part number, I quickly found other forums arguing over it being correct for the Jatco, or not. All I did was a part number search. That’s a bit strange.

How long have you been using it in your Freelander auto? How many oil changes have you done, and how often? What’s the colour of the oil too please?

Bin looking around the web this morning to see if I could find the article about the different Jatco recommended fluids, but I can’t. Will keep trying. Was given to me by the LR main dealer when I was asking them about getting me gearshift problems resolved. The bloke had been on a Jatco training course (assume it’s part of the LR tech training team I keep seeing up there) and was knowledgeable on the problems I was having. Turned out the feker was leaking oil, which I didn’t know. Anyways… one thing he did say whilst talking “off the job” was to only use the correct fluid. Directly stating if I were to take it else where for auto replacement, to make sure the correct fluid was used. Most popular fault they get is wrong fluid. Feks it up. I get the feeling he thought I would take it else where as it would be cheaper. Hence I felt he was looking after my best interests, regardless of them getting the work. Few independents wanted the work at the time. Many more who do rovers will do the replacement now.

Now I know the web is full of daft ideas un predictions etc… and I stand corrected if I’m wrong. But yer can’t help wondering if taking the risk wiv me £2233 cost of a recon auto and labour inc vat is worth the £22 cost saving of buying non LR main dealer supplied LRN402? Ponder that for one moment. That’s 1/3 of the cost of a tank of fool. Slightly less than an engine oil change (Castrol magnetic 10w40 5.5L). Un 1% of the cost of me repair.

Yes my replacement was more than other independents charge (eggsept for the local one who wanted more and was going to trailer it elsewhere as he can’t do it – same wiv the cam belts on a v6), but the cost of shifting ma hippo on a recovery truck, over night stay in a hotel un 2 days off work… int much different to the sum of that plus a cheaper replacement fitted. Many on here state straight away the Jatco is unreliable. Perhaps pudding will put up a poll fer us (has yer Freelander 1 Jatco auto gearbox ever failed? yes and no options only, must display users name for the options. Un “just wanted to be part of this poll” option too fer the tratter boys). But the Jatco is fairly reliable. Yes it has certain known problems that crop up, but that’s like saying tyres are unreliable as they only ever fail wiv punctures or low tread. Another good tail is that LRN402 int available no more. Have many receipts for it going back to 2007. That’s both as a leak top up and yearly change. Main dealer can supply it next day if I order it before about 10am.

I’m still under the impression the Jatco JF506E as fitted to the Freelander has a different oil when compared with the same auto fitted to say the Ford, all be it in a slightly different format. There also seems to be a thought of practice that ANY rover based auto oil can be used as a “top up” instead of the correct one, in the JF506E. Top up being a little bit, and not referring to a fluid change of best part of 4L in a Freelander 1 auto. This int a train of thought I agree wiv, un don’t have proof it’s wrong to do it. Bit I int taking the risk.

Here’s a good explanation:

MG-Rover.org Forums - View Single Post - Re- Auto box fluid getting it right

One strange thing I notice is the tub never mentions the Jatco JF506E, as fitted to the Freelander 1 v6 and td4 auto. Or at least it doesn’t on the front. Anyone got a pic of the tub rear details? The phrase “does what it ses on the tin” springs to mind here… In all the descriptions I’ve seen so far, and that’s about 15 sellers across the world, they all seem to state it’s ok for the Jatco JF506E but only state the following rover cars:

Rover 825 2.5 engine
Rover 45 2.0 (KV6) engine
Rover 75 1.8 , 2.0, 2.5 and 2.0 Diesel engine
MGZT & ZT-T 2.5 180PS

That don’t list the Freelander 1 auto’s engine specifically. Ses kv6, which is only auto option in the FL1, but not td4 as per the FL1 td4 auto.
