Hi I have a Freelander di 2.0 diesel 1998 158tho on clock I have a issue that wen I'm accelerating the red warning sign comes on but once I take my foot of the gas the red light goes away sometimes I also get a jerk feeling wen I try to get abit more power out of it been told could be lambda sensor but not sure I'm hoping its just a case of dirt in fuel pump in gunna by some blue x this week and see if that helps but any advice would be very appreciated
 
It won't be a Lambda sensor as the L series diesel doesn't have one.
Off the top of my head, I'm guessing the MAP sensor could be faulty. Otherwise look for leaks in the boost pipes.
 
Your other fault that it appears to be 'dropping down a gear' does sound like the clutch - presumably the revs rise but the car goes no quicker? Or are you saying the revs stay the same and the car goes slower?

Does it make any unusual noises when it does this?

Has it ever done it that you start the car and go to pull away and it doesn't move?

It only happens if I try to get more out of the gear I get like a jerk asif I was gunna stall but then its ok I also noticed wen I was on motorway that my car will not get above 70mph if i try the same thing happens but pull off and going throw gears seems to be ok I had a slipping clutch on my ford focus and the feeling I different to that
 
Sounds like the 2 problems are linked then - looks like the engine is hesitating for some reason and throwing the MIL light.

Nodge's suggestions are usually good starting points :) So I'd start there. Hopefully you can find a split hose between the turbo and the plenum chamber. IIRC, the MAF sensor is on the inlet manifold - knowing the L Series it could be caked in soot. If the EGR hasn't been removed and no maintenance has been done, the plenum and inlet manifold can get a seriously thick build up of soot which constricts airflow and starves the engine of oxygen especially at higher revs. People on here also say to be wary of the inside condition of the hoses as the can delaminate, which presumably blocks airflow.

It might be worth your while getting the engine's diag codes read. It might tell you that it is definitely 'air' related - ie MAP/hoses. It might also be fuel related if the pump can't keep up with demand at high speed or injectors are knackered. I don't know much about turbos, but I suppose this could also be Turbo related as it adjusts the turbo (wastegate?) for higher compression/air/torque.
 
Thanks for that wasn't to sure I will check pipes later on today and see if there is any sign of split or leak if not i will have to get code check some point thus week thanks
 
The L series doesn't know how much fuel is actually being injected. If there was too little fuel, for the available air, it would simply be down on power. Running like this wouldn't put the MIL on. So the only cause for the MIL is a monitored parameter. With the L, only the air volume and manifold pressure is monitored, along with inlet air temperature.
From the MAP value and temperature, the EDC calculates how increase in fuel can be burned.
The MAF is only used during EGR periods. This is so the EDC can work out how much the fuel needs to be reduced, to avoid black smoke.

The L is a good simple system to diagnose. Although reading the codes is the best way to pinpoint the problem.

That is the MAF but it's unlikely to be that. Your problem is likely to be lost boost pressure. So it'll be the MAP sensor not detecting the boost pressure. Or a leak in one of the pipes, bleeding the boost pressure away.
 
Where would the map sensor be located on my jeep
I don't know anything about jeeps. You'll need a difficult forum that. ;)

The Freelander L series MAP sensor is on the bulkhead behind the air filter assembly, just right of the heater pipes. It has a thin pipe and and electrical connection. Make sure the pipe doesn't have any holes or splits and the electrical connection is secure.
