hi every1 i recently bought a freelander for the winter i paid £500 knowing it was a problem car (£1500 in recepts in the past 8 months). Sreg 1.8petrol with private plate
At first i thought a wheel bearing had gone i was making a grumbling noise but on inspection the back tyres were out of shape so put 2 tyres on (part worn bout 2mm road tyres) and took it for a drive and the noise stopped so the noise was coming from the tyres.
It was having problems starting and most of the time would start with the coolant sensor unplug (allowing alot of petrol could enter engine). after a compression test it had low comp on cylinder 3.
i removed the head and found a nice big crack in the head.
So i found a 2nd hand head for (£80) it had already been skimmed (i double checked) i reground all the valves in the head and fitted a new uprated gasket and new bolts (£43). new oil (flush) filter antifreeze (£30). it started 1st time on the key so up to now its cost £653 so a very cheap car.

While i had the car on the lift i noticed the vcu ring could be moved about by hand asifyou could pull it off you could move it bout 10 or 15mm side to side. i take it the coupling damper needs renewing is this correct? if it does will this do the job?
LAND ROVER FREELANDER VISCOUS COUPLING DAMPER KIT | eBay
some people say you can test the coupling others say the test doesnt prove anything, any advice??? thanks

To be honest mate, if I were you, I would cut my losses and run. For what it could cost to put everything right, you could probably buy something much better and more reliable, such as a Discovery, or if you are lucky, a reasonably good Defender. Or, if you really want a Freelander (though fook knows why!), save the cash you would spend on repairing the pile of **** that is the 1.8, and buy a Td4. Although you will still get many of the same probs as the 1.8, such as knackered VCU's, fooked IRD's and rotten rear sub frames. If you really want a Land Rover, that is a good, comfortable everyday drive, then get a Disco or RRC. If you want a 4wd estate car, which is what the Freelander really is, then there are far better ones out there than the Freelander.

Thanks for the reply but like i say this is only for the winter. Its my 3rd car. i live on a steep hill and my fiat punto (diesel) struggles to get up in the snow/ice and my vauxhall VX220 has got no chance in the snow. im sticking with this car not buying any other 4x4 at the min
But if i get the landrover bug id probly sell all my cars and just buy a rangerover sport or new disco as theyd fit all my needs except fuel economy.
Really im just looking for advice about the coupling.

this may sound like a stupid question but what do they do? why are they just a solid coupling?

No, they work by using a silicone based fluid inside the housing between 2 sets of perforated plates that allow the fluid to flow through them, one set attached to each output shaft. Under normal driving conditions, both sets of plates, and the fluid, rotate at the same speed. When traction is lost, one of the axles starts rotating faster than the other, this causes friction which heats up the fluid, which starts to get thicker and thicker. Eventually the fluid becomes almost solid and cannot pass through the perforated plates, they are then effectively locked together, and the 2 output shafts rotate at the same speed, with the engines torque split between them.

Thank you very much for the reply. thanks for taking the time to reply with sense rather then taking the time just to type in google or w.e. ive looked into this on google but wanted a definate answer as not everything you read is true. but martin reply makes sense

how do yu know if he is telling the truth?
why dont you read the definitive VCU thread that has everything you might need to know.

Bloody useless noobs

No Martin, but ffs - how much stuff is there on here?
Why should we spend hours finding stuff, evaluating it, discussing it, posting it and then peeps cant be bothered to look?
What is the point in being actively involved if the lazy buggers want it handed to them on a plate?
If they cant be bothered to look then I, for one, cant be bothered to spoon feed 'em

but you can be bothered to sit infront of a computer for hours typing ****e about people. Have fun
