2002 1.8 petrol ES
Owned since new, replaced pads and discs and all tyres; faults:
Split hose, rear window motor, sunroof runners, doesn't hold as well as it used to when braking suddenly, slips a bit front drivers side, cause as yet not found? I need to replace slave cylinder and bracket right now, and coolant level has been unreliable for about 6 months? No symptoms of HG failure, but who knows?? No splits or holes found...yet! I have a plant growing out of the drivers door sill. I love it, it's been faithful, and it's a really good drive.

I was pulling your leg Alberto! and your input is appreciated.

I'm the FL1 biggest critic, it has many faults and at the same time one of its biggest fans.

The L-series is a solid engine, the most reliable of the bunch, some N.I. Rover drivers tune their L-series to 150bhp. Keep err lit

I always say to people, find a motor you like and stick to it.
I agree, why sell a perfectly good motor for little money.

Viva Italia, we have the Giro d'italia here at the moment

Great ;)
Reading the last post written before this one, I noticed I forgot another little fault...my sunroof is jammed too! Runners broken, motor's pinion rattling...at least it does not leak!

Nobody ever wants to buy a jigsaw puzzle already finished :)

Back to topic: car is worn out. Too many faults to cover now. Buying another.
Will probably be willing to flog the current one pretty cheap though if anyone wants a project - better that than scrapping it.

So far the biggest issue with my Hippo is the remote central locking, I've tried replacing the sensor on top of the speedo, tried replacing the fob with a new one programmed to the car and tried the sequence of turning the key in the lock all to no avail :-(
Glad I got a 3 door so far as no mechanical sunroof to go wrong or rear window regulators but I did of course replace all four tyres as a precaution and the VCU as the bearings were shot.

Time for me to have a post.
My 3dr had no prop. Knackered ird. No passenger window regulator. Burnt exhaust valve. Drivers door lock was for a different key. All when I bought it. Since then I had the tailgate regulator go, the gearbox let go,
All fixed and 4wd reinstated.
My latest 5 dr has problems with the drivers window. The tailgate window. Sunroof doesn't work. Clutch slave cylinder blown. It smells of undetermined animals and is filled with hay or straw ( I can't tell the difference) the sills have some rust at the rear. One headlight doesn't work. Drivers door and passenger rear doors don't unlock with Central locking. The prop shaft is inside instead of underneath... I am sure there are more issues to find and fix.

But......... Total outlay for both freelanders is currently around £1.2k so I expect to have these things to fix.

It's all part of the fun having a landrover!.

Well,......I bought my wife's Hippo off the JUNKYARD!!! (NEVER,..... as in "never ever" we thought of buying ANYTHING off the junkyard!)

Since I am a BORED DIY kind, I took the challenge to put this thing back in service. Wife fell in LOVE with it. So far,.....replaced the engine and tranny, and encountered just the electrical problems. Everything points to faulty barrel connectors. She LOVES her Hippo, and I don't mind ####ering with it. I even like the "little LR" (I'm driving 06 L322).

Hippo is a FUN little 4x4, and it has a nice retirement on our ranch. I bought an extra one just for parts! It's fun trying to sort it out, swapping parts, and getting the "looks" in traffic (not many of them left on the SoCal roads!).

So far,....we're happy with it! Some people have to have "latest and greatest", but we like to be different. So far, so good.

Had my Td4 Sport a year now, in which time am losing coolant (cracks in expansion tank), ongoing issues with noisy front brakes (whilst driving, not just under braking). Otherwise pretty minor complaints so far such as dodgy door speakers, lack of aircon, squeaky clutch pedal, oh and I daren't use the sun roof as it sounds awful and am worried it might get stuck open.... but I do really love my Landy Hippo!

Hi i need help, my freelander 2 wont start, when you put the key fob in the car it says :steering column locked: any ideas please.

03 1.8 85,000mls or so
owned for 18 months

Rear brakes siezed - repace discs pads
Front Bake problem - replaced brake pipe

Clutch failure - repaced Clutch & master/slave cylinders

Gearbox whine in 5th only - replaced Gearbox

Front Wipers not parking - replaced motor

Fuelguage reversed - swaped wires over from sender

02 TD4.

Bought in April and knew it needed a new clutch master cylinder (knocked price down a bit for that).

Also replaced the VCU / bearings as it came with full service "mystery"...

2.5 V6 Petrol.

54 plate with 60000 miles.

Had mine a year, bought from a dealer and was perfect quite literally until the week after the warranty ran out. Faults to date are-
Both rear window electric motors expiring.
Two coil packs giving up the ghost.
Heated front screen switch (I hope) lost it's ping.
Rear diff mounts collapsing (very easy fix though).
Radio on board sat nav expired.
Gearbox issues (currently under investigation but still being used).
Expansion bottle has cracking and needs replacing.
Has intermittent electrical fault that sends dials crazy ??????

I like it, it is very comfortable, cruises at motorway speeds without any effort, I will persevere with it until it really pees me off and then I will get rid of it and probably buy a newer one.

Just thought I would add another, the bi fold mirrors no longer bi fold, just flap around aimlessly until taped or nailed back in to place.

2004 HSE TD4.
Heated windscreen works on passenger side (but i dont drive in europe)
Every door speaker has blown and been replaced one at a time
All Elec window motors plastic gubbins break/fail -when window down (& usually just a few weeks out of sync with the door speaker replacement!)
Rear door handle comes off in your hand - mostly because there is a rust hole the size of australia hiding behind it
Sunroof frame has morphed over time into a natural rain shower :)
Lack of power at 70mph was fixed with a shiny new turbo (in retrospect, i think it just needed a hose)
Cold winter mornings the td4 takes @3 carbon halflifes to get up to operating temp, and literally can not pull you out of bed until then.
Bonnet catch cable helpfully just pulled out, requiring some yoga moves to get the bonnet open

Despite the obvious fun these challenges have brought - its still one of the best motors to have thrown my £££ at.

Landys are great!

Freelander 1 TD4 2004 (later edition)

Just coming up to 100,000 miles

Several issues over time but many have been attributable to just wear and tear.

One 'biggy' though was an IRD failure at around 4 years old - 38,000 miles
That cost £900 to replace (fitted). Note failure not wear and tear....!
Bought from new so over ten years and average 10,000 miles per year on the whole
not too bad.

Decided a while ago to 'keep' it so will run it for as long as I can.

Just completed a silicon hose replacement for the intercooler, etc. Looks good.

Well parts are cheap and there easy to work on, it's annoying things that f@#k up like switches and windows cables. Heaters are not good but heated seats make up for that! I don't mind the TD4 at all.
