Hi,
I'm new to these forums so please bear with me. Basically, I was driving down the m1 when the engine began overheating and started to smell oil burning. I was towed to a local services where the guy said it a head gasket however the mechanic who dropped us off doesn't seem to think this is the case.

The oil seemed to be leaking from the bottom of the engine, and while the engine did over heat he didn't believe it to be symptomatic of a gasket failure. The water was empty but there was no evidence of a water and oil mix which apparently occurs as a result of a gasket failure. He said it may be the oil sump.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had had similar symptoms and what the causes were or could be? Sorry, it's a little vague.

Thanks.

That is not true - specifically the 1.8 as the usual failure is to pressurise the water system with combustion gases. He said it may be the oil sump.

I just wanted to know if anyone else had had similar symptoms and what the causes were or could be? Loads of peeps, unfortunately. Sorry, it's a little vague.

Thanks.

How often do you check the water?
if it has a major overheat, it is likely to be expensive.:(
refill it with water and have the coolant gas analysed for combustion gases.

Hello,
Sorry for being out and not replying. It is a 2.5l V6 petrol engine. The guy who said it may be the gasket did so, I believe, because of the smell of burning oil and the absence of water.

The second mechanic couldn't see any oil on the top of the engine, it was more on the underside of the engine. He also said the oil and water tend to mix to form a milky composition which is not the case here.

Many thanks.

Depends where the gasket has blown - there's never a 100% answer to whether the gasket has blown or not according to various symptoms. Though not as bad as the 4 pot K-series, the KV6 2.5 is hardly unknown for blowing head-gaskets.
